SOMEONE Help! CSS - How can I find "untaxed social security benefits for all family"?

I was wondering for the CSS Profile, howI can determine the "untaxed social security benefits my parents expect to receive for all family members except me, the student" in any given tax year.

Sorry if this is confusing... but basically.
-The 1040 reports that we get $15k per year for untaxed SS benefits.
-My mom says we get an additional $16k per year for my fourteen yr-old brother in untaxed SS since my father died? Can this be right, as it doesn't show in our 1040?

-** On the CSS, would I report $15k (the number stated directly on our 1040) or $31k (because my mom says we get $16k for my brother... but is that even possible because it only shows $15k on our 1040?) **

Bump. Please!? Anyone?

If it’s on your mom’s 1040 it isn’t untaxed, is it? Or are you looking at a worksheet? If it’s included in your mom’s adjusted gross income, report it for FAFSA. If it’s not, don’t. Only untaxed SS benefits are excluded for FAFSA.

The amount reported on the 1040 is taxed, so it is not reported as untaxed. Your brother’s social security income is most likely not reported on a tax return & so is reported as untaxed social security on the Profile (not reported at all on FAFSA). It sounds like only the $16k is untaxed.

On the 1040 it reports taht we get $16,128 in SS Benefits… $1298 of which is taxable…

**Does this mean that we get $15k or so in UN-taxed SS benefits as well as the $16k for my brother? **

Yes, that is correct.
