Okay so I went on myfinaid for Berkeley and they were giving me about $4000 total in grant money (uc middle class scholarship and berkeley undergraduate scholarship)

And then on "Award Details" I accepted the federal subsized loan and the federal perkins loan, and declined all the unsubsidized loans. I updated the page, and then suddenly all my $4000 in grant money disappeared?!?! Now my net cost is more than $4000 greater...

My parents were freaking out and I'm going to call the financial aid office tomorrow. But is there anyone who knows what happened?

yeah apparently not… 14k to 10… no idea. I’m going to go to FinAid myself tomorrow. I’ll keep you posted. Do you have any questions you want me to ask…?

Oh well at least ALL of your grant money didn’t get taken away lol
Yeah just let me know what they tell you.
I already emailed them today and they said they’d check on my situation… so hopefully everything works out. $4000 is a lot of money :(

Did either of you receive Cal Grants?? My son originally received a $15,000 scholarship to Berkeley, but when he received his Cal Grant, the scholarship went down to $5,000. Is this what you are talking about??? If it is, it is not unusual and happens to everyone who receives a Cal Grant and a scholarship.

Nope, I didn’t receive a Cal grant.
My grant money was right in front of me (berkeley undergraduate scholarship, UC middle class scholarship), and then I accepted the subsidized loan offers and declined unsubsidized loans, clicked update, and 10 seconds later all my grant money was gone. :(

This is what they said to me in their email response:

"Mr ____
I have passed on your concerns to fitting analyst, the anamoly you now
report is something we must locate and amend, good luck

If you received scholarships not grants such as Pell Grant or Cal Grant, then the scholarships may disappear and reappear from time to time because the finaid office is trying to match your aid amount to those private ones. Just relax because the FINAID office is trying to meet the needs of all classmen not just freshmen and transfers. Trust me this has happened to everyone in one situation or another. If this issue is not resolved by the 2nd week of school I suggest contacting them directly at 211 Sproul. Cheers :)

Is it normal for an entire 20 thousand dollars of the Berkeley UG scholarship to disappear? It reappeared under the unsubsidized loans section as “offered.”

I’m planning on doing that, but the thing is, I have no proof that the UG scholarship was ever there. I did not take any screencaps or print it out because I hadn’t heard anything negative about Berkeley’s offers and took it with full confidence.

Would it be because I haven’t submitted a citizenship confirmation? I’m out-of-state and cannot deliver the documents to their office in person, as required, but I emailed them about this early in the summer and they said that as long as I submit my documents before I start attending classes, my offer would not be affected.

Do you know if they’re generally honest with these things? :/

Yes, they are generally honest with these things. Remember they have a ton of students at Cal and many of them are on financial aid of some type. It can’t be easy keeping track of all of this for every student! It could just be a genuine mistake or maybe you are missing some form that is affecting the offer. The undergraduate scholarships are based on need and merit. Did your need change? Did your EFC change?? Did you receive additional outside scholarships that you just recently reported?? Many things could have happend but there is only one way to find out and that is to call. Be prepared to wait a while. My husband had to call this morning for our son and it took him a few tries and a long time on hold to get through. Don’t worry. It will all work out. Just stay on top of it and find out what the deal is. Good luck.

Thank you for your reassurance :). I can’t say anything new has happened with my financial status, but who knows? I hope your son’s financial aid situation worked out well!

You’re welcome and my son’s situation turned out just fine. They weren’t reporting his outside scholarship correctly. THey still aren’t but we got confirmation that it was okay on their side. Hopefully it will be corrected on my son’s site. Good luck. Let me know how it goes.

Hi people, checking back into topic. As for that “lost” 4000 in grants, a couple days later it reappeared. Whoever said that the FinAid department is just tinkering with the costs is probably right.
