someone please chance me for the 15-16 school year!

I like in Hawaii, and am currently a freshman. I would start my application this fall for the 2015-2016 school year, and I've been pretty stressed out! I'm worried I don't have enough extracurriculars, good enough grades etc, and I want to make sure I do everything I can this year to really increase my chances, especially because applying to junior year is difficult because of a limited amount of spots, so if you guys could help me and tell me what areas I need to improve on, i would really really appreciate it.

I have a 3.879 GPA (unweighted), i am currently in one honors class and next year will be in two honors and one AP.

I take piano lessons, art classes, volunteer weekly at the local animal shelter, started a Free the Children charity group at my school, and participate in the pottery and hiking clubs. I am doing a two week home-stay and immersion program in france this summer (in which I will stay with a french family and take intensive french courses every day). I also am volunteering in the building of replica of an ancient hawaiian voyaging canoe, which will be taken out on the ocean on a long trip to replicate the journey of ancient hawaiians from Marquesas to Hawaii. I have done 4 boundary waters canoe area (BWCA) trips, in which for 2 weeks I am fully and completely immersed in the wilderness with a group of girls, carrying only the basic necessities for survival.

I haven't taken any standardizde testing yet, I will be doing that in October but I have high hopes because I am currently enrolled in tutoring for that, and testing is one of my strong suits (when I took the SSATs before to get into my current school, I was in the 98th percentile)

I also currently am enrolled at a pretty prestigious high school, it is the same one that President Obama attended (I'm not sure if that fact will help me at all hahah)

I am applying to deerfield (top choice), andover, exeter, choate, lawrenceville, promfret and choate probably. I'm still looking into other schools as well, though.

This belongs in the chances forum but given your great ECs, classes, high SSATs, GPA, and location, I would say you have a good chance. These schools also care about personality and you as a person. Keep doing what you are doing and if I were you I would not worry too much and when the time comes, spend time on your essays and get to know the teachers that will write your recommendations. You should try a sport, also. Really let them know what sets you apart from every other applicant.

@needtoboard unfortunately I can’t do most sports because I have an injury, although I did sports in middle school (before getting injured). do you think I should let them know of that during my interview?

and oops sorry! i thought I put it in chances, my bad.

I’m just wondering, but why would you apply to another prep school if you’re already in on of the most prestigious prep schools west of the Rockies?

@sincostan i get asked this a lot actually! well first of all, my school is not a boarding school and BS has been a longtime dream of mine (since i was in 2nd grade). second of all, though my school is great and has so many great teachers, course offerings and opportunities I can’t say I’m very happy here. I don’t feel as though Hawaii is the place for me (that sounds strange, I know! who wouldn’t love Hawaii?). Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying I expect to have a perfect life at boarding school, and for everything to be great and way better than my current situation, but I feel as though BS is definitely where I’m meant to be! Since I have been given the opportunity to go out and get one of my dreams, why wouldn’t I do everything I can to see that it comes true? hopefully this answers your question, sorry for rambling.

I feel exactly like you with my school and location!

@needtoboard right??? I don’t feel as though many people understand and I always feel weird describing how I feel. I always get a lot of weird looks when saying I don’t think Hawaii is the place for me hahah.

I think you sound like a great candidate but the fact is your applying for junior year. I know you are already at a day school and that this might put huge strain on your family but consider applying as a repeat sophomore since for junior year applications, there could be 100 apt applicants applying for 2 open spots.

@potentialboarder: anything and everything can change, so keep up the good work and start working on your application:) early. The process usually starts lated August/early September.
