So during my first semester of sophomore year, I got a D in honors Bio because my dad was getting a life threatening surgery done. For some reason, I told my teacher and she wasn’t buying the story so she didn’t accept my late work. I tried auditing the class but it was too late. Is there a way to hide this grade from my transcript? I really dont want to own up to it because it partially isn’t even my fault
You cannot hide a grade from your transcript, no matter the circumstances. Could you retake it for a higher grade?
No.
And college applications will have you sign affirming that the application is accurate and truthful.
@milgymfam I could retake it for a higher grade but will the D still show up on my transcript?
Depends on the school issuing the grade. I have definitely seen it where the grade is replaced if the same exact course is retaken. I’ve seen it where both grades show- but even then, with an explanation from you it still seems better than just the bad grade floating out there. You should ask a counselor at your school about the policy for repeated courses.
…and while you are at it, work on figuring out how to handle similar problems in the future. It is entirely your responsibility: there are systems for handling life’s curve balls. Learn them- b/c your father’s surgery is unlikely to be the last curve ball you face.
Maybe this response to a completely different and unrelated member might help…
Despite the different user names, this is not “a completely different and unrelated member;” they are the same person.
Yes, I sort of figured that…
Why can’t you get medical records to prove that your father was in the hospital? I would go back to the teacher and show her the paperwork/medical bills.
If that doesn’t work, use the “Additional Information” part of your college admission application to explain the extenuating circumstances behind a poor grade.
Was your only bad grade in honors Bio? If I were an AO I wouldn’t buy a story “I got a bad grade because of X” if there was only one bad grade. So, if you are going to try to explain that grade I think you need to consider your story.
Also, I hope you would never say in the supp info that “it wasn’t your fault” or “I don’t want to own up to it” both sound immature and entitled and are a huge turn off.
In the future, if you are having trouble with a teacher not believing you you need to get adult help in the moment, not later after you’ve gotten a bad grade. Is there a counselor or someone at your school who can help you? I am assuming your mom was busy with the surgery but even then she could have sent the teacher an email from a waiting room on your behalf. Be proactive and you will get better results, being retroactive makes it look like your only issue is the grade and teachers do not like that.
