I have a really close friend that is in this unique situation right now. Does anyone have any advice that I could say to her? Anyway, the situation is this.....After graduation from HS, she attended a community college, and then she transfered to berkeley. She didn't do that well mostly because of financial troubles at home and became a dismissed student. She tried everything to gain back the status of being a CAL student. She even took some courses through UCB concurrent extension program out of her own money to show her potential to be successful at CAL. She managed to pass all her classes (If she were a CAL student, she could have stayed) while maintaining a nearly-full time job. She was SOO close to graduating from CAL. Just 2 more classes away from getting a BA degree. She emailed nearly everyone in the dean's office and everyone she could think of to try and get back to being a regular Cal student. However, they all rejected her and still wouldn't let her get back in. What options does she have now? What possible things can she do now? Please help! Any advice or comments will be GREATLY appreciated. THANK you SO much!.

If she can't be a CAL student, then I guess there is no point of begging all of the Deans and administrative figures at CAL to let your friend back in. You must remember, trying to convince a Dean (or someone of this caliber) to reverse his/her decision is something that is no piece of cake. I am a transfer student to CAL and I tried to convince the College of Engineering to let me change my major, and I believe that it is unlikely going to happen. From my experience, I think that the administrative at CAL don't really take into account the situation the student is in. It's more like......this is the decision that we've made, and nothing more can be done.

Therefore, since you mentioned that your friend is a dismissed student, that is something CAL doesn't take lightly. It really doesn't matter if you are at the last semester before graduation.....if you maintained below a 2.0 GPA, you are subject to dismissal. Since your friend was dismissed, I believe that she should enroll in the UC Extension Courses and achieve a very high academic record (above 3.5) to present to the administrative figures. This might show them that your previous academic record did not really represent you. If this fails, she might want to consider transfering to a LAC or transfer to UC.

there is usually a readmissions process for people who dont do well. your friend mustve REALLY screwed up if she got dismissed completely.

in comparison, one of my friends was an eecs major. his first semester, he pledged a fraternity, did not pass (D or F) two of his classes, and got a NP in one of his other classes. in his second semester, he didnt go to class after the first week, and talked to the dean. the dean made him take summer school at berkeley as well as CC classes for the fall semester (now), but he should be back in spring.

it must take a hell of a lot of work (or lack of) to get kicked out of the university

IS there anything else my friend can do?
