Someone please put the essay in perspective.

I am stressing out so much about this essay... and its really hindering my writing. Can someone please put this essay into perspective??? Like is it a deal breaker at most of the schools.

Don't stress about it. Write whatever comes to mind. You can work on grammar and idea centraling later.

Basically, you need a solid essay at any school, regardless of scores. But if you have a 4.5 GPA, 2400 SAT's with 2 800 SATII's backing it up, and a whole slew of community service and extra-currics...the essay isn't always as important as it is for those of us who aren't perfect number-wise. It's there so that the admissions people know who you are outside of numbers - so tell them! And take your time. Go through drafts. Find something you're passionate about, and you'll be fine!

It depends on where you're applying. For public schools, essays usually aren't very important. Those schools make decisions primarily based on stats.

For Ivies and similar colleges that get an overabundance of highly qualified applicants, the essays can be tip factors.

Frankly, most other colleges accept the majority of their applicants, so the essays aren't that important unless you send something like a racist rant or something else offensive.

meh the problem with my essays are the way theyre written... the ideas seem good but i have a problem with execution. I'm guessing at these highly selective colleges your essay must be perfect in both ways.

not nessecarily perfect, but they want something interesting and different from the thousands of other essays they read.
