someone pretty please help me?!?!

so a friend of mine really wants to go to college but has no idea which one so i was hoping the cc community could provide some possible suggestions and such? he wants to major in english and possibly minor in philosophy(or maybe vice versa major philos and minor english)

by the way his scores are just a bit better than mine and I got into nyu steinhardt this year so i told him that he had a very good chance of getting into nyu(he plans on going to steinhardt as well)

in any case his stats are as follows and please list some universities/liberal arts colleges that you think would be a possible match for him. I know for a fact he wants to try for John hopkins so if someone could list his chances for that, as well...(remember please that he is an English major) also if you could chance him on uc berkley, ucla, ucsd, ucirvine, claremont mckenna, usc, and syracuse

rank 84 out of 480
non- weighted gpa 3.86
weighted gpa 4.13
taken three APs up to junior year

AP ART HISTORY 3
AP ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE 3
AP LANG AND COMP 5

SAT SCORES= 2080 math 750 cr reading 670 writing 660

SAT 2 Lit= 690 US HISTORY=610

No real extracurriculars other than swimming, art, and creative writing but over 100 CSL Hours

he is a good writer and has already begun his admissions essays(so he says) so i assume they will be pretty good

so please chance him and name some possible matches and thanks for taking the time to read this!!!

Assuming he is out-of-state for the UCs, I think Berkeley will be a big reach, and UCLA will be a reach as well.

He has almost no chance at Johns Hopkins from what you’ve provided (<1% IMO).

sorry i forgot to mention that he was in-state(california)

anymore advice guys??

Hi! I’d say that he has an OK chance/low reach at UC Irvine. I’d definitely say that the other UC’s you mentioned will be nearly impossible with his relatively low SAT scores (meaning in comparison to other applicants to these specific colleges. They aren’t bad scores at all) combined with his lack of EC’s. I’d say Claremont Mckenna is a definite no. They care deeply about extra-curriculars, definitely a great deal more than the other schools you’ve listed. USC as well.

Maybe he should think about some of the less competitive UC’s: UC Santa Barbara, UC Santa Cruz, UC Riverside. It seems as if he wants to stay in CA. Pitzer, maybe, although this will also be a reach.

Best of luck!
