USC
UIUC
Emory
Rice
Georgetown
Cornell
Northwestern
UMich
Duke
JHU

I am aware that fame should not be the major factor in choosing colleges, but I am still curious.
Even if you have to skip some colleges because you don't know about them, still please rank the colleges you know.
I don't expect this to be unbiased; I just want opinions. (For example, people who live in California has heard of USC more than those in other states)

Someone already made an opinion: cornell>duke>jhu>usc>northwestern>umich>uiuc>georgetown>emory>rice

Also I got this data from collegeboard:
Acceptance Rate
Duke 21%>Georgetown 22%>Rice 24%>USC 25% / Cornell 25%>JHU 27%>Northwestern 30%>Emory 32%>UMich 47%>UIUC 65%

Is this reliable? Of course, I am aware that UMich and UIUC is biased in that they prefer in-state. I am also aware that major makes difference, but I am asking in general.

What do you mean by fame? USC. UMIich, Duke, John Hopkins are probably the best known of that list. But not for selectivity or academic reputation reasons. Football, lacrosse, the hospital are reasons for being famous. Even my 10 year old knows those school names. If you want to go international, there would be a different order, I’m sure.

cptofthehouse, yes, I also posted same thing on international website. I just want to see opinons from different people.
ridewitbd, I like how you made tiers. Thanks!

I don’t know if UIUC has a bias for instate. The percentage is not telling. I know that NY does not and the schools have that percentage for in-staters as well. UVA and Wm and Mary have a strong bias, in fact, they are limited in the % of out of stater they can accept by law, but they have a larger % of out of staters that UIUC or NY. California has a bias because some of their schools are just over flowing and cannot accomodate their own in state kids.

Famous for what? Do you mean just name recognition for the average guy on the street? If it’s just name recognition, then I would say they fall out something like this:

Tier 1: USC, Michigan, Duke, Georgetown (used to have a very powerful basketball program, so is known to middle-aged and over sports fans, but could drop to Tier 2)

fame?? these schools are famous for many different things. If you ask a medical student he’ll tell you one thing, if you ask a law student he’ll tell you something different and if you ask an english student he’ll tell you something different as the other two. Don’t get stuck on a name. go for a school that will be a good for you and what you can offer the school

Remember, I said the average guy on the street. I guarantee you that the average guy on the street in Terre Haute, Indiana is VERY unlikely to have heard of either Emory or Johns Hopkins. Sports teams are going to make a big difference to fame for the average guy on the street. Also remember that the place you live tends to skew this result, and I have lived all over the country. Finally, remember that this board is full of people who have made it their business to know about schools, so “fame” on this board is quite different from “fame” for most people.

The OP didn’t define “fame,” so I used my own definition. Using that definition, I think I’m probably right, but have no way to prove or disprove it.

Sorry for making it vague. And yes, as Tarhunt did, I wanted to know in you guys’ own definitions (OPINIONS… I am not trying to justify or define anything). Maybe sports and academic combined.
