Some people only put their weighted/unweighted GPAs on chance posts and ignore UC GPA. My regular GPA is 3.73/4.47 and my UC is about 3.93. I stated this in every chance post I made. I saw an OOSer post a GPA of 3.75 UW/4.3 W (neglecting UC GPA) and he was told by multiple people that he has a fairly strong GPA. Meanwhile, I am told that my GPA makes me a "reach, especially since I am OOS." I've pretty much accepted the fact that I very well may not get in, but my question is about general GPA chancing.

When I visited Berkeley in September, I was given a pamphlet thing. I looked at the "Fall 2007 Freshman Profile" and saw "Average Unweighted GPA: 3.82 and Average Weighted GPA: 4.25." In curiousity, I asked the woman at the desk if those were UC GPAs. She informed me that they were not. A couple of months later, I called and asked for the average UC GPA of admitted applicants. The man who answered the phone told me that the only available averages were "regularly weighted and unweighted"

Someone way back when informed me that the average UC GPA was well over 4.2. Please bear in mind that the UC GPA harms me, as it only allows 8 semesters of honors classes to be weighted. I recalculated my 10th and 11th grade UC GPA (in which I took 18 semesters of honors/AP total, but I only counted 8, as that is what the UC GPA IS), giving myself straight As. It turned out to be around 4.25. The only way I can figure it would be higher is if someone took less credit classes, in order to go closer to 5.0.

Perhaps they were assuming that the 4.3 was the UC GPA.

Funny, when I emailed them, I was told that the 4.25 is the UC GPA and that they do not collect weighted GPA; that would defeat the whole point of the UC GPA (to normalize for differences in weighted GPAs).

That’s what the UC GPA is – weighted (but capped).

Why don’t you post your classes/grades and we could tell you why there’s a discrepancy? (I don’t get why there’s such a huge discrepancy between your UC and W GPAs.)

If you’re OOS, i believe the UCs have to take into consideration weighted GPA because there is no way of telling if an honors class you took is “up to par” with the classes the UCs consider “honors/ap.” I know at least 3 of the non-frosh honors classes i took weren’t considered for the +1.

Also, you have to take everything people say here with a grain of salt. Except for the actual admission peoples, no one here is an expert or 100% sure of everything they say. There is no way of telling if someone will really get in, and a lot of people on this website tend to put a lot more weight on GPA/sat/act scores than admissions people do. Things like personal history/activities/awards are really important, as well as showing the type of person you are on your essay.

kyledavid, we got in an argument about this previously and then I talked to an admissions officer and was told differently. The reason for the discrepancy is probably the fact that I’ve taken so many honors and AP classes, but I earned about half Bs in my sophomore year.

"The man who answered the phone told me that the only available averages were “regularly weighted and unweighted” "

See, I specifically asked him “Does that include 9th grade or are these numbers according the method specifically calculated by the UC system?” He told me, as the lady before him did, that yes, those numbers included 9th grade in that and all honors/AP classes.
