Something about International Bacalaureate and US Admissions

Hey,

I am doing IB in my school at the moment.

I am thinking in droping from Diploma to Certificate..

I would continue with my 3 HIGHS

that way I would have 3 highs and 3 standard courses and I would quit TOK..

Considering that I think I would have much more time for taking care of college stuff: admissions, SAT and etc..

Is it true that on the US they dont give a damm about IB?
Would doing that hurt my chances of admission if I dont mention..

hmm I think you need diploma mate. I'm doing IB as well and Certificate is devilishly tempting but I think top US schools would scrutinize your IB closely, and when they notice you did certificate, that could reduce your chances greatly. stick with Diploma. And good luck, its a hard and grueling course.

Get the diploma. It looks a lot better than the certificate, and you said the only thing you would drop was TOK... it's not worth dropping for that.

I was looking at the applications and there is nothing talking about Certificate / Diploma

Simply like you write:

Course / Level Grade

Would they call the IB to verify?

BTW how on earth do they want to know my IB grade since I am doing the exams in november and sending the aplications in december?

My school is diferent from most since the end of year is on december not on june.

also I am doing pretty bad on the SAT and I am a good student top 5 on all my courses

I really need to study for the SAT so the extra time would pay off It think..

Thanks for the opinions cowgirl and nick

i wud do the diploma! they will know if you are a IB canidate because the classes you took will appear on the transcript. if they see 6 IB subjects but no TOK, then they wud assume you are not taking the diploma. Most colleges will know if you are a diploma candiate or not. They expect you to take the most rigorous courses at your school, in which your case, wud be the diploma(right?) most colleges wont see your final IB score when you apply, but that doesnt matter-they want to know if youare a diploma canidate or not. someone told me that on UPenn
s site, it said that
if your school offers IB diploma, we expect you to take it
or sthing like that.. so i wud definately take it.
If you WERE struggling in lets say, 2 or 3 IB classes and you were gettng C
s and D
s, then I might suggest dropping the diploma. But it seems like you are not, so I wouldnt drop it.
Yes, SAT s ARE important. I
m guessing you are a junior right? then you would have some time to study for the SAT` s during the summer and breaks. just do your best. good luck!

lol, time to study for the SAT. Look mate, if you are doing IB, you should do the diploma, you will have to managae your time in such a way that you are able to do both that and study for the SAT. ( you are not the only on doing it )

And TOk is one the best parts of IB, its not worth sacrificing for a diploma

Yeah, don't drop TOK, its fun and interesting. I did not have advanced english last year so I am not doing full IB, I'm just going for the certificate. And unless you don't have enough for your CAS or you don't have your extended essay written, I do not see any reason why you shouldn't d it.

oh no, I'm doing IB Diploma and my counselor didn't put 'TOK' on my transcript?! he just had the 6 subjects that i'm doing on my transcript! shoot... what do i do?

Actually I am on my last year of school.

Well so I will keep the IB Diploma ! =)

One thing .. your counselour writes everything on the apropriate sheet and gives it back to you so you can send togheter with everything or he send it separatelly?

What if his paper never arrives?

I think the school should send all the stuff. Well if you're going to Fedex them, then ask the school to have everything sealed and have it Fedexed to your college(s).

That said, what are you planning to do next year?

I hope to have a really good time before college starts in the 2nd term.. trips, relaxing and doing stuff I like so I can go to college with max force.

I will ask my counselour tomorrow.. But I dont think my school would be willing to pay 60 dolars of Fedex letter to the US for me.

Dude i'm so scared - I didn't put "IB Diploma" under the degree on my application. The colleges will think that i'm just doing high school diploma - what do i do?

Does your transcript have your classes as IB. And you can only put IB diploma Canidate

Regarding TOK, you can skip all the classes and lectures and still get your 3 bonus points (providing you have a good EE). The classes are really just to help you think out of the box, but ultimately its the essay that counts and the fact that you completed your TOK course. It's my family tradition to skive TOK classes, and plus they are only once a week for an hour-ish. Just stick with it.

my transcript says "IB English... IB Math..." (6 subjects). It doesn't say anything about me doing IB diploma :(
