Something really funny... please read

So I get a really big kick out of all the threads of people asking “what are my chances?” as if they’re going to get a legit answer.

The people responding to these threads, chances are, have no idea what they’re talking about. Not to call anyone out, but the user BO5TON seems particularly keen on responding to threads to bash BU whenever possible, and generally spreading misinformation. (not to discredit his own experiences, which are certainly valuable to hear about, but when I see him “chancing” people, I get a good laugh…)

I don’t mean to offend BO5TON — I’m making these comments more as a piece of advice for people using this service to be weary of what you read — chances are, it’s someone who doesn’t really know what he / she is talking about.

Just wait it out. There are so many factors that play a role in admissions, and some random person, NOT on the board of admissions, will not be giving you an accurate answer.

This site is better for questions dealing with the student experience, but that’s just what I think.

sure, there wll be nutheads, but generally, the people on CC are very helpful, including for giving chances.

That's not reflective of me--it's reflective of the site in general. I dont know for certain if someone is getting in or not, but if someone wants an opinion, I'm there.

I'm not offended in the slightest. I find it funny you say I have no idea what I'm talking about, though. Just because I disliked a school that you liked, doesnt mean I have no idea based on the fact that we're on disagreement...

great post

Thanks, I appreciate it.

OK BO5TON, well where do you get off thinking you DO have an idea of the admissions process? I only say you have no idea based on what you've said in previous threads, which seems like you're just guessing, or basing your responses off your own case, not the actual criteria the admissions board uses to review applicants.

But my point was really exactly what you said... what you tell people is your opinion.

I'm just on here to remind people that that's all it is, one person's unqualified opinion.

I cant believe this is serious...That's the whole point of the site--no one knows if anyone is getting into any school, be it Harvard, Yale, BU, or Podunk U.

(I look at admission statistics for the record)

Really, dude, you need to move on. Time to put BU in your rear view mirror and spend your time thinking about what comes next. Seriously.

For the most part, I think people who put up "chances?" threads are looking for psychological comfort rather than a "legit answer." Honestly, take a look at most students that applied ED to CAS and you'll see that they have outstanding GPAs, ECs, and SATs. They aren't looking for an "honest" answer, just an anonymous third party to tell them that they'll get in, so they can sleep a little better at night.

In other situations, they're just preparing for the final decision.

At any rate, there's nothing wrong with seeking an opinion from a third-party, provided you aren't stupid enough to consider it an official opinion--and if you are, you probably shouldn't be going to Boston U in the first place.

I put up a chances thread myself, and I appreciated the support and insight other people have given me, including B05T0N in other threads. When it comes down to it, I don't see how anyone could complain about receiving help. It's up to the individual to use discretion when reading it.

Glad Ryette is one of the few who gets it...

Ryette hit the nail on the head.
