Hey guys, I know everyone is doing one of these so it’s becoming awfully boring seeing the same numbers and questions get burned into your retinas but here I am doing the same thing. I’ll keep it short so you don’t have to move your eyes too much but long enough so that you DO need to scroll and will get slightly annoyed with me. Many apologies. Also my grammar will be lower than normal because I’m writing this at 1:30 A.M. and existentialism is more important than how I am spelling (That’s right, I said it, mom.). I’ll put it into a list format to be somewhat pleasing to your eyes
High School Experience:
Decided early on who I was as a person would be my priority over my grades (a.k.a. finding my way > getting dat A)
Extracurrics:
Joined robotics because I wanted to learn more about engineering. Became the captain of team sophomore year. Got to worlds every year since then. Started elementary school team beginning of senior year.
Self-taught guitar 5 years. Beginning to transpose this year
Coach, mentor, an athlete in taekwondo. 2nd in States in 2017 and National Qualifier
Joined Key Club; left. Rejected from NHS. Joined Rotary Club in spite, became president senior year and got school to be pilot school for recycling for our district – also had bottle drive for hurricanes but too much of my time was put into that.
Academics:
Got A’s and B’s in everything except two bad semesters in AP Bio and AP Calc (C+'s in both)
~3.5 unweighted GPA
Class Rank ~22/370
Took 12 AP’s I think
In program in district where only 30 people get accepted out of the entire district. Focuses on Math, Science, and Computers
5 in AP Calc. Other APs got 3s and 4s
SAT: 1470 (My excuse is robotics season was then and I had no sleep basically)
Math: 740
Reading: 730
Life:
I am an immigrant from the Philippines. My mother and I were in poverty until we came here when I was 4
Uh I really really liked airplanes and got a love for the SR-71 Blackbird. I think I said that name more than my actual name.
Still really like aerodynamics but got obsessed with space and still am.
Good athlete in taekwondo. Gotten a 1st place in every competition I applied to except States where I got 2nd
Father passed away in 2017, right before he retired. Big surprise and devastating. Affected me, but really made me more inspired to work even harder
Because of dad dying, mom and I are below the poverty line and have to move now so that’s fun.
Since I got rejected from NHS I realized how many people really just do it for application boosters and sought a club where people genuinely wanted to help people out. That’s how I found Rotary Club and as president my personal goal is to instill a passion for volunteering in any way possible to the members so it’s a very loose club where people can do whatever they want for volunteering and can have other members help them for it.
Also decided that it would be more important to focus on what I want to be (aerospace engineer) rather than trying to get better scores because I used to get 600s on reading and then I read one tip before I took the actual SAT and got a 730 on reading.
I think a strong suit of mine is just how caring I am of other people. I will genuinely listen and spend time talking with someone to help them out even if it results in me staying up later to do hw or doing it later in class. I believe in the person much more than their numbers so as a captain in robotics, coach in taekwondo, and president of Rotary Club I view people not as what they have done but what they currently do to further themselves in each thing and I’m there to lead them in the right direction and give them opportunities like a proud papa
I also believe that a strong suit of mine is how passionate I am to build or experiment to make new things. During robotics season I stayed from 6 P.M. to 1 A.M. every day just to try and make the robot better. Currently have plans to try and fix our greenhouse in school by designing a watering system and a swamp cooler because why not
So basically like yeah I want to apply to MIT not because of it’s name but because I believe the people there have the same passion that I do to learn and I love collaborating with people because no matter how smart you are like you can not be as smart as a group of people working together, refining an idea, discovering errors together, and becoming more knowledgeable people overall because of it.
How does my app look? Questions are encouraged, but if I was your dad I’d make it mandatory to rip apart aspects of my application so that I could respond as to why I said that and we could both learn from it. Any questions or comments are welcome (except ones about my social security # I’ll give you my credit card number it’s my first one don’t plan on signing up for more)
Tl;dr
I’m not from Portland but my application does make me seem like a hipster in terms of mindset do you think this will help my chances of getting in because I have a lot of characters at least 3. Any questions about me I will answer 100 percent. Ik this is all skeptical work because no one gets into MIT but the more people collaborate and understand themselves the better we all are at showing MIT that we are worthy of an admissions spot. I love you guys and by the time I wake up I better see some responses
