Something Strange about the Andover Wait List

I personally received a letter saying that I am on a waiting list of 25 people that would be the first considered if a spot was open. If this is true or not, I don't know.

Does the supplement really say YOU’re in the top 25? The way I read it, it is an attachment with FAQ. (Tanyoosha, I wasn't directing this to you--just asking a general question to the people who received the attachment)

Commonly Asked Questions about Andover's Waiting List"

"How many students are placed on the waiting list?
There are approximately 25 students on the waiting list for each grade. The number constantly changes during the spring and summer as some students decide not to remain on the waiting list and late applicants are added to this list"

Of course, one can infer that you’re one of the 25, but does it state that you are? Perhaps a parent who received one of these letters could call Andover and just ask them to clear up the confusion. There has to be at least 25 people on this board alone who say they’ve received the attachment.

Lexima, was the letter you received (3 times!) also from Andover, or from a different school?

Jennycraig, it was from a different school.

i got the 25 letter also and i'm going into 10th grade. i was a bit dissapointed finding out that there are more than 25 kids that are actually on the waiting list as the letter stated though because it lessens the chances of getting into andover which are already quite small

jennycraig-
I called Andover this afternoon on behalf of my daughter. I was told that in fact she was one of 25 students on the priority wait list. I didn't feel the least bit that there was any deceit or underhandedness to this. I got off the phone feeling that it is what it states it is - a waitlist of 25 students. I was told to call after April 10 to see where Andover stands in numbers. (I guess to figure out better what her chances are). In addition, I was told that as students recline Andover's offer - her application will be looked at (only if a girl declines, of course, due to beds) with the all the other girls on the "25" wait list. Now, we didn't talk about any other wait list out there, so I don't know if there is another list. Although, I think I read that D'yer maker did confirm there is another "list".

Just for clarification. odonos...I didn't confirm anything about Andover wait lists. I've been going entirely by what's been posted here. newyorker22 said she has 6 students on the "regular" wait list and 3 others that received the "25" faq sheet addendum. She expressed amazement that 3 of her students from the NY/NJ area would garner so many of the very limited slots on the wait list. If all Andover wait list students are among the "25" -- regardless of whether they got the addendum -- that would mean she had 9 of 25 (assuming all 9 are applying for the same grade).

sorry D'yer Maker, it was newyorker22. A post way back in the 40's. I do agree, it's pretty suspicious that 3 of his/her students made it on the top 25. 3 8th grade students applied to Andover in my small ME town. 1 was accepted. 1 was rejected and 1 was waitlisted (my daughter) with a Top 25 attachment, which I confirmed is just that - only 25 kids.

I'm furious.
I sent an email to Andover telling them that I was going to leave the waitlist and this is the email they sent back to me. (and I'll include the email i sent--it's just copy and paste so the one i sent first will be at the bottom)
I'm thinking that they DEFINITELY didn't READ my email AT ALL.

Dear _______,

We will keep your name on the active waiting list and will update you from time to time about your status.

Dear sirs/madam,

My name is __________ and I applied for Andover as a freshman for the year of 2008. I was put on the waitlist and am emailing right now to turn down this offer. I appreciate the chance that you have offered me, but I have decided to choose to accept a place I was offered at another boarding school.

Thank you!

Sincerely,

Don't I make it CLEAR enough that I'm LEAVING the waitlist? HELLOOOO. Let's actually READ the emails that applicants send, why don't we, Andover?

Why don't you just call them directly? From what we have heard on this board, they may try to convince you to change your mind! Are you really in Tokyo? Maybe the time change is a problem for calling. Anyway, the andover email may have been electronically generated. Did you get it right after you sent your note? They may have not updated their system yet. I get the idea that it takes them a while to do anything because they are so big. Also, SPS took awhile to respond to a waitlist request.

I called them just a few minutes ago and told them that I was withdrawing from the waitlist. The lady was just like "okaaay, so what's you name?" and so on. No "persuading." She asked me where I was going to choose instead but I ended up not giving her a straight answer--I just said that I'd been accepted to two schools and that I was having trouble deciding. :P

And yes, i'm from Tokyo. I can usually only call after like 10 pm or something so after I'd read the email, I was waiting and waiting for the time to come :P I'm kind of glad I got it off my shoulders though. It was kind of...refreshing. :D

No, I don't think it was an electronical reply. It came like 2 or so days after I sent it so I'm guessing that someone actually did type it (or copy and pasted it).

So, you're going to either choate or exeter? I just read your advice about the surrounding of the school. I think you're right to go where you feel most comfortable. After all, 9th or 10th grade you still want to enjoy yourself! You may end up going to a "big city" college or grad school and can experience the brick and pavement then. Congratulations!

Thank you!!! :)

I am in 8th grade and I was waitlisted for 9th grade with the FAQ attachment of the "25/grade"

am i in the "Top 25"?

thx

I'm happy that I got the top 25 letter but I'm still concerned. 25 is a lot when you think about it and i still have my doubts.

maybe they put more on the waitlist than 25, but they expect some kids to decline the offer to stay on the waitlist. but i'm guessing they're pretty adamant with 25 per grade because i called and they told me that they try to keep the same amount every year unless there is a big upheaval in the amount of applicants.

I got the attachment as well. I think you're right, it doesn't make sense to send out 3 letters.

We declined our "top 25" slot about 2 weeks ago.

i called and they said the top 25 letter and the other letters have no relevance to where you are on the waitlist. every kid has a fair chance to get accepted, no one is ranked. 10th grade girls, they'll be making calls in the next few weeks! there's hope!:)

(sorry pressed enter before i was done) but i am also very suspicious. this seems a bit of a shameless plot to give kids that got the original waitlist letter false hope, a sort of courtesy letter. the lady at the admissions office told me clearly that there are 25 kids per grade and usually not much more. this is constantly creating confusion in me. obivously there are more than 25 kids per grade on the waiting list. even if they aren't "ranked" then what is this with the "top 25" list? all this is making me a bit confused........

not that anyone suspected anything different, however, i received word that andover will not be pulling any 9th grade girls from its wait list in the foreseeable future.

my daughter is disappointed, as i'm sure many of you are -
best of luck wherever you choose to attend
