The housing contract my D received says it starts on September 6. But Mich Housing says move in is the 4 th and 5 th? That seems like something is wrong but am I just confused?
I believe that it says that food service starts on sept 6
My son will be a sophomore and his contract says :You may occupy your room from: 09/06/2015 TO 7:00 P.M. 12/23/2015 AND 12:00 P.M. (NOON) 01/03/2016 TO 11:00 A.M. 04/29/2016. I thought it was only freshmen who could move in sooner, but then website says “General Move-In for all undergraduates is Friday, September 4 and Saturday, September 5.” http://housing.umich.edu/fall-movein I am going to send an e-mail to ask.
I did send an e-mail but response says may take 1 to 3 days for answer. I don’t think my son wants to move in before the 6th anyway, but it would be nice to understand the inconsistency.
Ok. I talked to housing. Their position is that prior to the 6 th students are residing based on express permission ( like a guest in a home) vs the contractual right which starts on the 6 th.
I received the following e-mail from UM Housing: “All housing contracts begin on September 6 regardless of move in date. Returning undergraduates should plan to move in on September 5 during move in. Your student will be able to select his specific move in date and time from what is available later this summer.”
P.S. For those of us who live far away and have already made airline reservations, having the contract start on a date after move in date (without also mentioning move in date) is very annoying.
Don’t worry. You can move in anytime after September 4. The contract does not start till 9/6 so something may be not fully operational before that (e.g. Cafeteria).
I realize he can move in later, but he might like to move in at the same time as rest of hall. Luckily we have Southwest tickets and can change. There are so many students who can drive to campus the school sometimes seems to forget about those who have to fly. I sure wish they would not have classes the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, for example, like most private schools. Would make traveling home much easier.
So freshmen can move in on Friday, Sept. 4 but their cafeteria meal plan won’t start until Sunday, Sept. 6? They would be on their own to purchase meals/food in the area? Just trying to understand this.
The cafeterias are likely open on move in day. That is the way it has been
It depends on which day you move in.
Last year honors moved in a day before other freshmen and the South Quad dining hall was open that day. By the way, at least last year, parents were allowed to eat for free. If anyone really wants to know, e-mail housing.umich.edu. They are good at responding.
Yes, LSA Honors students will move in Thursday as they have a program from 10-3 Friday to attend. Any student on campus Thursday can then dine at S. Quad.
I wondered about these stated dates as well. My son’s contradiction is that he’s in the Lloyd Hall Scholars program and despite what it says on the contract, his move-in date is Sept. 3 (per a separate email from LHSP). So will he be able to eat from the 3rd to the 6th without paying extra? Very strange they don’t get their dates consistent. Also, does anyone know when they find out how their roommate is?
Last year my then freshman son was told who his roommate was on August 6. As I mentioned in a prior post, last year honors moved in a day earlier than general freshmen and the dining hall WAS open. I think the 6th in the contract is essentially an irrelevant date.
It actually makes sense to have some, but not all, dining halls open once some students begin to move in.
