Something's missing!

OK...I've read thread after thread on this board looking for advice that will help me, now I finally decided to post one more "what colleges should I apply to" post. I have reviewed my son's college list and for some reason I just feel that we have overlooked something. PLEASE take a look and tell me what you think:

Unweighted GPA - 96 (not sure what that equates to on the 4.0 scale)
Mostly, if not all, AP and Honors classes
SAT - 690 Math, 670 CR, 720 Writing (retaking Oct.)
ACT - 30 (retaking Saturday)
2 SAT II's taken - scored 690 and 680
Editor in Chief of the Newspaper, Lead Attorney in Mock Trial, Wrestling, Golf, Peer Tutoring, etc. etc. etc.
Very good writer
EXTREMELY hard worker (we anticipate great recommendations)
Wants to major in English (loves to write)
Wants a fairly large school, in or near a city
We live in NY

His list is a combination of Reach, and Target with not so many safeties - Any suggestions on a school we overlooked?

Thanks in advance!

UPenn
UNC
UVA
UCF (near his grandfather)
Fordham
NYU
Boston U
Northeastern
U Pittsburgh
Duke
Brown
GWU
University of Maryland (College Park)
Drexel

Duke, Penn, Brown are big reaches. I like Pitt as a good match with possible merit aid.

Your son needs to find one true safety school that he likes. That is a school that has to admit him based on his statistics, and that your family can afford to pay for without any financial aid other than federally determined financial aid. It will most likely be one of the SUNYs or a community college near you. Check the websites for the SUNYs that seem interesting, and see if they indicate any specific combinations of grades/SAT/etc. that guarantee admission.

After that, you need to take a good hard look at your family financial situation. Run some of the calculators at FinAid! Financial Aid, College Scholarships and Student Loans and read some of the threads (especially the "sticky" ones) on the Financial Aid forum (the link is on the left-hand side of this screen under "Top Forums".

Why does your kid need a true safety? Because every single year there are kids who don't get into any of their reaches or matches, or they do get into them, but find out late in the game that they can't afford them. Please don't let your kid have this happen to him.

U of Rochester
