because my intended major doesn't feed into a specific career (ex. med-->doctor, engineering-->engineer) and I wonder if, despite being a hard worker and strong student, I will ever be able to find a job that can support the type of life I want. I want to be able to travel, I want to be able to send my kids wherever they want to go to college, and I don't want to have to constantly worry about finances. The future is so terrifying.

What do you want to major in?

I want to major in Philosophy. I am absolutely and completely in love with it. I know that it’s reading and writing intensive, and it’s definitely one of the more respected humanities majors, but I still don’t know how it’s going to land me a job :/

Well, you could do a double major. One major can be what you love, and the other one can be something that you can tolerate that will provide you with the money to do what you love:)

Question: What is a recent philosophy Ph.D.'s usual question in his or her first job?
Answer: “Would you like french fries with that, sir?”

Ahh ****!!!

Why don’t you do a double major?

Also, you could always be a college professor.

God help the student that has me for a professor…I’m horrible at teaching.

Do a double major! Several people do this.

I want to be a history major. I guess my prospects are slightly higher (but not much)

Q: How do you get a history major off your porch?
A: Pay for the pizza.

Do a double major!

You’ll probably end up as a teacher if you don’t.

I’ll just have to go to a really snooty college so people will give me a job based on their feelings of inferiority

…This?

haha. Gryffon you’re terrible :]

You can find a job with any major. Why don’t people realize this. Work at whatever you’re interested in and work hard at it. You will find that studying something you’re not interested in only makes things worse. Or you can double major. Stop thinking you’re gonna end up on an alley in the ghetto because you’re not. But if you do, tell the homies I said hi.

Thank you for finally pointing out my suggestion! haha

The OP didn’t respond to the possibilty so I thought I’d mention it until he did.

You can pursue traveling with pretty much any profession, as long as you’re smart about frequent flyer nonsense and are good at finding online hotel rooms, museums tickets, etc. But you’re probably going to have to decide if you want to be financially secure or pursue something involving raw philosophy (which is…teaching). Of course, you could always go to law school and put those intensive thinking/writing skills to use.

PSHT. You don’t need to double major.

Listen to Misterpop92.

In order to convince my parents that my prospective major, linguistics, wasn’t completely useless, I showed them this game: [SpecGram—Choose Your Own Career in Linguistics](SpecGram—Choose Your Own Career in Linguistics)
