I didn't mean a literal exchange....But most people who attend top schools, universities or LACs, attend top grad schools.

kh892,I would also include the military academies as 'ivy" status, They are old enough and very prestigious

Reagan was an actor, bad example.
Johnson only became president because Kennedy(Harvard) as assassinated...I'll admit Kennedy and Bush Junior are unfair, Kennedy's family owned Boston and Bush Junior got in due to legacy and endowment.

^ But that does not mean that going to MIT for undergrad will lead you to Princeton for grad school. Just because a lot of people who go to prestigious undergrad schools also go to prestigious grad school doesn't mean that it's the brand-name itself that mattered. I think Princeton was probably glad to accept Feynman, because he was a genius!

You said that you admit that Kennedy and Bush both were able to get into Harvard because of family wealth and connections, but you forgot about the other Harvard alumni that became Presidents--the Adams'--very, very wealthy men from the Northeast in the 1700"s when not much else was available in that area of the country--and the Roosevelts, again a very wealthy family with strong connections---so it's my opinion that the notion that going to Harvard was responsible for these men becoming President just doesn't seem to hold up--they were all groomed from day one to become wealthy lawyers and statesmen--it didn't matter what school they went to.

FEYNMAN AND GELL-MANN and LEDERMAN ARE GOD! They are in fact Human versions of the Higgs Bosons :)

After quitting Cornell (because he felt "uninspired"), Feynman acutally rejected a professorship offer from Princeton and opted for Caltech instead because of a) he didn't like Princeton's weather and wanted warmer weather.

Mind you this was the same time that the famous Albert Einstein was teaching at Princeton.... :)

Go Caltech!

Totally agree, West Point, Annapolis, Airforce Academy are all very pretigious schools in my book.

I agree it is hard to say greater then 50 years ago.
I believe 50 or so years ago you could get a "top" educating either by
1)Being rich
2)Passing the admission exam

.....I REALLY wish you could just pass the admission exam in todays world
Would get ride of the hassle of GPA,rank,ECs..etc.
And lazy smart people like me would be just fie:)

Also ask the wealth question to MIT, It doesn't apply. MIT didn't admit people on wealth, yet still has a $10,000,000,000 endowment.
Caltech has only 2000 students overall and still has a $2,000,000,000 endowment.
They certainly did something VERY VERY right.

Actually Feynmen got advice to not stay in the same place to long by his professor at MIT. That is why he could have got a better education at MIT,but chose Princeton for his PhD.

You reinforce my point on military academies being "top" school....West Point is older then Cornell. The West Point class ring is the most recognized ring excluding The Super Bowl Ring,The World Series ring and the Bronze Beaver

What about GPA? I mean does a 3.0 from an MIT student standout against a student with a 3.5 from a lower insititute when trying to get that job?

"Surely You're Joking Mr. Feynman" is that a novel?
