Somewhat final list...and chances?

Torchi:

I like your list better than the first one, as it is more in line with your capabilities. To pare it down a bit, I'd strike Westmont off your list as you'll probably get into JHU and St. Olaf, UWashington, in a worst case scenario (and if the pwoers that be are having an amazingly bad day when they read your application). I don't know about Stanford, but the other schools are within your reach.

Personally, I like JHU, Columbia, Northwestern, St. Olaf, and UWashington on your list, but that's just the way my taste in schools run. Good luck. And, I hope this helps some.

thanks, blaineko. anyone wanna guess my % chances at the schools on my list?

? anyone have any comments? particularly on Columbia, Northwestern, Johns Hopkins, Georgetown, since I don't know exactly what they're looking for or what exactly my chaces are at them...?

You look like a good candidate for all but S and Columbia. What my college counselor would tell you is not to apply EA and take the SAT again. You are well below average in score for Stanford and unless you think something else will carry you, wait and apply RD.

Torchi, I went to a local talk by a Northwestern Rep. I think they're a good match for you. I think they would really like your ec's, esp. your music. Also, what comes across in your posts, personality wise, is the kind of person NU is looking for, in my opinion. I also think you would like NU, would fit in well.

thanks classicist. do you know what NU's music program is like? (how good/well-known it is and also how many opportunities I would have to participate as a non music major)

anyone else have any ideas on my chances for any of these schools? blaineko, you say i'd get into JHU in a worst case scenario? i thought it was maybe more of a reach than that...?

Torchi, my Mom asked a question specifically at the NU talk about that. (I play a stringed instrument.) NU is very friendly to the idea of taking a lot of music there while not being a music major. I know that they definitely promote music even for non-majors. And because it's featured so prominently in their video at these talks, it's a good bet. Good quality teachers, too. Go for it! And good luck!

Northwestern's School of Music is very very well known...similar to Rice University's Shepard School of Music. My friend, actually, was accepted at Cleveland Institute of Music but rejected from both Rice and NU

wow, sounds like I would really like the music program there! thanks everyone.

so does anyone have any comments about my other questions? would JHU actually be a match for me? and what about my chances at Columbia, Georgetown, and the rest?

Hey, I think UW honors is probably a safety for you. I have similar stats to yours and my counselor told me it was a safety for me (I'm also a Washington resident). If we don't get into our top choices, maybe I'll see you there!

adummb05 - glad to hear it's a safety. I have a friends who's in the honors program and she really likes it. She says everyone, like her, is a national merit finalist who got denied by Stanford :) UW has all the strengths that I'm looking for in a school (science, music, etc...) but I don't like the big size too much. Hopefully the honors program would have more of a small-school feel.

anyone wanna take a shot at my %s?

I agree with HarpGirl regarding reputation of music at NU. Good teachers, there, & not just devoted to strings. Featured in their video was only brass and/or woodwinds, I believe. I think Georgetown is also, ability-wise, a match for you, but you just seem more the Northwestern "type" to me (in a good way). You seem outgoing, & NU is a friendly school with a good community feel, in addition to interesting academics & engaging ec's.

thanks classicist. so does anyone think i have enough "matches," or do i have too many reaches and safeties still? I've been considering adding Emory to my list..

when you say private piano/trumpet lessons, what do you mean? because if you have been taking them, then they dont belong on your app. If you have been teaching other people, it seems a bit hard to believe.

yes i mean that i've been taking them. why wouldn't that belong on my app? it shows that i've had a long-term commitment to both of them. i'm sending in piano recordings and showing my involvement with trumpet through all my band ec's. so does that actually not look good on an app to say i've had lessons??

so anyways....does ANYONE have anything to say about what my % chances are at my list of schools?

Bump!!!!!!

Might want to look at Holy Cross-good LAC 1 hour from Boston.

so what about Stanford SCEA, Columbia, and Northwestern with my scores (720v, 690m, 800 writing, 790 math 2c, 680 us history)? What kind of emphasis do these schools place on the SAT 2 writing and math, which are clearly my best scores? and what kind of chances does this give me considering my ec's and everything else?

anyone out there?
