I am an international student who has been withdrawn from my institution. I will be applying for transfer as well as reinstatement, but have been required to take classes elsewhere for this semester.

As I understand it community colleges are my best bet for such situations. Can anyone recommend places to apply to for just this semester, be it community college or otherwise? I am currently in upstate New York but am willing to relocate.

If it is of any help my area of study is economics and I am looking for a place which is respectable and won't be a waste of time. I took a look at Santa Monica College, which is known for having lots of successful transfers to good 4-year institutions, but the deadline for Spring has already passed... Are there places that are similar to what I am looking for?

Finally, I'd like to mention that as an international student I can't take part in programs that don't grant full-time student status (such as visiting student programs, etc).

If so, you need to get on the phone with the closest possible community college IMMEDIATELY. You do not have time to fool around trying to find a “more respectable” place. You need somewhere that will let you in NOW and will transfer your visa. If the first place you call can’t help you, keep dialling until you find a place that will.

it seems as if youve dug yourself into a bit of a hole. I’m going to disagree with archie because i believe SUNY’s require you to apply for xfer and you may therefore be about three months too late. i think that your only shot may be a community college at this point…its very late in the game however. as happymom said, call up all interesting cc’s now, many have probably started classes already

I didn’t mean SUNY universities, I meant their community colleges, might still let martin enroll in the school, and classes at this point. It was just a suggestion since he was looking for community colleges in upstate NY. The community colleges typically let you enroll up until the day before a class starts. Many classes started today, but some SUNY community colleges don’t start until next week, so martin should be able to contact admissions, transfer in, and make up a schedule. martin is going to have to investigate which schools begin next week if he wants to enter the SUNY system.

This an example of one of the SUNY community colleges that doesn’t start until next week, but they stop accepting applications tomorrow. You would want to talk to admissions asap!

The deadlines for most places I looked for had passed and/or their international advisor flat-out rejected the possibility of me applying on time.

The only place that took me was Medgar Evers College in NYC that has an open admissions policy and whose deadline was yesterday. I ended up registering and will be there for this semester.

I will be a minority and life will be different. I was wondering whether anyone has advice for me? I only want to be there for 1 semester, so how do I maximize my time there, and how do I maximize my chances of transferring to another place?

You maximize your chances of making a successful transfer (either back to your first school or to a different one) by taking a solid group of classes and getting the very best grades possible in them. This means doing all of the reading, all of the homework, all of the problem sets, all of the lab assignments, participating appropriately in class, etc., etc., etc. It also means that you will never ever ever miss class unless you are so sick that you can’t hold yourself vertical in your chair in the classroom, and that at the first sign of trouble, you will make an appointment with the instructor to get (and then to act on) their advice.

Find out about advising resources and tutoring resources at MEC and USE THEM. Let your advisor know about your situation and about your transfer goals. You may want to consider enrolling in courses that would guarantee a transfer to a specific college/university.
