Son applied to Tulane, any chance?

He took the ACT once, 34C, 36R, 35E, 35S, 31M. He has a 3.7uw gpa, 4.2w. He has taken and scored well on 6 AP exams through junior year, including Calc BC, AP Bio, AP Chem, APUsh, AP euro, and AP Lang and Comp. He is taking 6 more APs this year, physics C, AP Psych, AP stats, and the other English literature AP. He will also finish a PLTW bioengineering series. He is a 4 year varsity athlete, and he does volunteer work related to that. He also has a job working at a tree nursery. He is in the top 10% of a class of 600. He went to the Tulane visit that came to our area, and he has spent a fair amount of time on the websiite.

I am reluctant to encourage him to get excited about the school, as I think it is a read long shot for most people. We could afford for him to attend without a big scholarship, so I both want him to do his best to write good essays, while at the same time not wanting to disappoint him if he doesn’t get in or doesn’t get a scholarship.

Do his stats give him any chance?

Yes. If you Google “Tulane Common Data Set” you will see that he has a chance of acceptance. His 34C ACT puts him above the 75th percentile score of 33 for the 2017-2018 data set. His uw GPA is his weak spot, but still within range. The number of AP courses he will have taken by graduation is very impressive! Good luck to him!

Sure, he has a good shot. Rather than tamping down that enthusiasm and excitement, I would encourage him to channel it into writing an outstanding “WhyTulane” essay. An exceptional version of that essay and degree of demonstrated interest and enthusiasm are important variables for Tulane. They actually want kids like your son who are excited to join the community, and if that comes through in his application it can only bolster his chances. Good luck!

My first post should say we can Not afford to send him without a scholarship.

He certainly has a shot and could get their highest merit scholarship. Beware it is still an expensive school even with it but he has time to apply for the Paul Tulane scholarship. DS got into honors program (with the newest dorms) and $32K a year off of tuition with similar stats and work experience relevant to his intended major.

Tulane is a great school to shoot for merit at.

You can get up to $32k just through the regular app, and you can bump that to full tuition with the DHS, PTA or CSF (which all require a separate application and have slightly different criteria).

You never know unless you apply. But just be clear/honest with your kid that Tulane won’t happen without some schollie dollars.
