So...yeah. That happened. Son applied SCEA to Yale, his first choice by far after visiting five of the eight Ivys and MIT, last week. It's truly where he wants to go - the campus, the curriculum, the residential life, the location, all suits him to a T. He's got excellent objective numbers, good ECs; I think he wrote decent essays. Did NOT expect to get a call this soon after applying.

Now I now I'll probably get several "everyone who applies gets a call" kind of responses, but...is that the case? Is receiving a call so soon (or at all) a step in the right direction, or is it just because there are plenty of Yale alums in the Northeast? Should I be taking this as a good sign, or just another part of the process for all 30k or so applicants?

Well, it is just part of the process–Yale will try to get interviews for as many as possible of the applicants, and my guess is yes, there are plenty of Yale alums to do interviews in the Northeast. Other areas of the country, sometimes not so much. So, not getting called for an interview is not a bad sign, either–there might just not be enough interviewers to go around.

1) yes, this is the case.
2) Yale’s goal is for all SCEA applicants to be interviewed. My ASC has assigned over 90 students with a dozen already interviewed.
3) It’s not a sign of anything besides an efficient ASC director and a prompt alum who called/emailed your son.

It’s tough not to rise & fall on every little thing – I get it. But there’s really nothing to do at this point. Best of luck to you on your waiting.

From what I understand, doesn’t mean much of anything. I turned my application quite early and had an interview more than a week before the Yale deadline even hit. Good planning ahead of time, but ultimately does not provide a huge advantage.
