son got psat score...what does it mean?

Hi: My son received his psat score (that he took as a junior) and he received a 220 (99th percentile). Do you think that will qualify him for the round of national merit? Not sure what this means.

It all depends on the state that you live in. For most states 220 would qualify but for a few the cutoff level is higher. It varies year by year, but if you look on this thread you will have a reasonable idea about your son’s chances. Good luck!

I see you live in MA. Last year the cut off for MA was 221 so your son will be borderline on making national merit. You can only hope the cutoff drops this year but you won’t know for several months.

The cut-off scores won’t be known until either late Aug or mid Sept. Mid Sept is when NMSF are “officially” announced, but oftentimes schools tell students earlier and those on CC are able to figure out what each state’s cut-off score is.

My daughter got hers today too. It is exactly the same as the cut-off score for our state for the past 3 years. My fingers are crossed that the cut-off doesn’t go higher this year!

Here is the history for the past 3 years - as you can see, MA did go down two points two years ago so who knows. You’re in one of the toughest states though!! He’ll definitely be Commended though - so huge congratulations for that.

Thanks to everybody. What a bummer. I am thinking if the cutoff in mass was 221 for two years his nice 220 won’t make it. I need all the help I can get funding this college education… :)

But, we will wait and see.

Maybe you’ll luck out.

Great score regardless, he’d be a shoe-in if you lived somewhere else.
