horsfeathers-sounds like your s would get along great with my d!! she is also a non-drinker, non-jock…not shy, but reserved at times. what orientation are you attending? I am hoping she can get into the one on 6/12.

We’ve requested the June 17-18 orientation. We wanted to go to the earliest one offered because the students sign up for their freshman courses at orientation and it’s more likely that more courses will be closed the later you go. But my son’s HS graduation is on the 13th, so we had to take the next available date.

I find this early orientation kind of odd. My daughter’s at Gettysburg College was just the two or three days right before classes started. I wonder if there’s anything at all planned at Juniata right before classes start on Thursday, August 25 (freshmen arrive on Tuesday, the 23rd). Do they just hang around the dorms? Not knowing what’s planned for those two days, my son actually signed up for one of Inbound Programs where the kids arrive on Saturday. We’re hoping that spending time with a small group like that will give him someone to hang out/eat with right away. There seems to be a wide range of activities and interests in the Inbound programs and they’re free!

My neice at Goucher also did an early registration. It worked out great. I think it helps them prepare for college a little early and register with lots of help from advisors. The inbound program is a big part of the fall registration. I think the social aspects you mention are one of the key reasons for the program. It should make the transition easier and help everyone find friends they share interests with.

Congrats to all in the Juniata class of 2015…

I had asked last year about the early orientation and there is a lot of logic to it.

1 - Helps with early socialization to the new class (IOW, going in August is less of a social shock)

2 - Helps with planning programs, roommates, etc…

And yes, there are numerous additional orientation programs right before classes start. I think you can find it online or in some upcoming mailer.

my daughter is making her final decision this week between Juniata and Franklin & Marshall. Any insider tips on food at Juniata and surrounding town? Is there enough to do on and off campus?

oh, daisyq, I responded to you on another thread and didn’t realize your d was an accepted student. Sorry! Should have read this first!
As I said in the other thread, my d is accepted there and is attending! We visited 3 times. Spoke with lots of students. They all assured us that there is lots to do on campus and also stuff to do in town! I am not familiar with F and M so I can’t compare them for you…sorry. All I know is that the students at Juniata have all been super friendly to my d during her visits and that she has felt very welcomed and at home there. Good luck with your decision.
The food in the cafeteria seemed to be varied enough. There were also some good restaurants in town to eat at.
