My son just got his room assignment in Lawrinson. It looks pretty far from everything by looking on the map. Is it an okay dorm?

I’m going to be pretty blunt. If I had a list of dorms in terms of preferences, Lawrinson will always be at the bottom of my list. Even bellow sky halls. (At least in Skyhalls they treat you to a better meal plan) Lawrinson It’s pretty far from campus and the walk can be very exhausting but hey, your son can look at it as a workout from all the food there.

Yikes. I don’t think I will share that info with him but I appreciate the honesty. There must be some redeeming qualities
.

Yes. Closer to the carrier dome I guess? But don’t worry. He’ll probably make so much friend that he’ll forget about the distance. :)

Uhmmmm…I have to weigh-in here as a former resident of Lawrinson Hall (30 years ago!!!), and as a parent who recently visited the son of his best friend who was living in Lawrinson. Lawrinson is not that far from the quad. In fact, if your son has a class in the Physics Building, Link Hall, HBC, or Carnegie Library, it should not take more than 8 minutes to get there - I know, I use to time it. It is up a hill, but when you return you are heading down-hill. The split doubles in Lawrinson are, IMHO, some of the nicest rooms at SU. As House of London indicated, it is very close to the Carrier Dome. It also has a branch of the Syracuse University Bookstore on the first floor.

The one downside of Lawrinson is that during “rush hour” the elevators can be full (the building has 20 floors).

Well living in Lawrinson can become very annoying fast when you have to trek up the hill to get to class.

On the flip side, it has its own bookstore downstairs! The rooms ARE pretty big too.

:)

Thanks for all the info!

Lawrinson’s fine. I lived in Sadler, its sister dorm, frosh year. Lawrinson has the benefit of Sadler’s dining hall next door, and there’s a bus stop outside. I showed up at SU thinking Sadler was super close to campus; it didn’t seem like a big deal to walk 10-12 minutes to Newhouse, so I figured that was as close as you can get and didn’t complain. I guess, ignorance is bliss.
If Lawrinson has a downside, it’s the combination of its height, wind tunnel and penchant for fire drills.

Yeah, sorry, London, but I lived in Sadler last year, and once forgot a report for class that was absolutely due that day…my class was in Maxwell, and although I didn’t run, I made it back to my 3rd floor dorm, taking the stairs, and back to class in about 12 minutes…for the entire trip. Sure, a real leisurely walk will take you 10-15 min to get to the far side of campus (Newhouse, Bird Library, etc), but it’s not as far away as BBB, super close to Bowne and Carnegie, and great for games. The dining hall in Sadler isn’t the greatest (unless you’re a veg), though, but there’s a smoothie bar that makes up for it (serving sandwiches, desserts, and of course smoothies). Lawrinson has its own laundry room, though, which is a HUGE benefit compared to complexes that share like BBB.

I agree, the worst part of Sadler/Lawrinson is definitely the wind tunnel…between ESF and the dome can get pretty cold/windy but you can always go around by the stairs and it’s not bad, just a bit longer.

The elevator’s probably the worst part. And the walk to class really isn’t that bad, I lived in sadler too. But like the others said, the bookstore is nice and being close to a dining hall.
