Song and/or monologue database?

Is there any easy way you found to search for age appropriate characters? Its seems like there should be an easier way to narrow down all the material out there. Or maybe my S is way over thinking this. He is really starting to stress over song selection and honestly we aren't getting a ton of help, it seems as if the college audition process is not something his vocal coach is well versed in. I can't afford an audition coach. By no means does he want anyone to choose his selections, but it seems like there should be an easier way for him to narrow down material to review. I purchased a book for him the "Teen Pop Broadway Collection" thinking all of the characters in this book would be age appropriate. He fell in love with one of the songs and the musical it was from only to later find out the character is 34 years old. I could see his stress level rise, he thought he was really onto something. So far the material he's used at voice recitals is either not age appropriate or it is overdone. I was wondering how you or your kids searched for material and if you had any helpful tips.

For help with parts and ages, try stageagent.com - click on “Partfinder” at the top and then use 18 for the age (if you go higher or use a range like 18-20, then you will have to sort through lots of 20-30 parts, most of which are probably too old), and input your other criteria (voice part, lead, supporting, etc.).

For example, here is a sample of a few results for for age=18, baritone, lead + supporting:

You can combine this with, “The Broadway song companion : an annotated guide to musical theatre literature by voice type and song style” by David P. DeVenney to look up songs for characters listed, or use Google or Playbill.com (the Broadway Song Companion lists vocal range, which is very useful).

Of course, not every character in an 18-28 age range (or whatever) will necessarily be appropriate, but its a start.

Also, Stage Agent and The Broadway Song Companion are not completely comprehensive, particularly for newer, short-run/obscure, and/or Off-Broadway shows, but its a start.

Some younger guy characters from more recent musicals that come to mind are:
Gabe - Next to Normal
Frank, Jr. - Catch Me if you Can
Moritz or Melchior - Spring Awakening
Barfee, Chip or Leaf - Putnam County Spelling Bee
Emmett - Legally Blonde

I should have added that if you don’t get as many results as you would like from Stage Agent, you can expand the search age range. For example, here are some of the 7 pages of results for Tenors ages 18-22:

For monologues, there’s an excellent resource too, that’s a lot like the stageagent one, but for monologues, not roles. I can’t remember the name of it, but if you go to thespians-united.■■■■■■■■■■, it’s on the resource page.

(I swear, I’m not trying to promote myself! I’m just not in a position where I can go find it, sorry…)

Also, bare has great, great songs for teenagers, if you wanted to take a look:)
