Song Choices

My S really wants to go here and he wants to make sure he has the right/appropriate songs for his auditions. Hes singing an uptempo for one of his songs but he doesn’t know whether he should do a golden age ballad or a contemporary ballad. Both choices fit him and his voice very well. I’m not an expert, help me please.

@JRobMtMom - for BW - you take 3 songs into the audition room - and VICKY chooses which one she wants to hear! So - you and your son don’t have to agonize - take all three into the room - and sing the one she picks out! Have you seen the video with audition tips for BW? I’ll see if I can find and PM you the link.

…and don’t be surprised if you sing all three…

…but don’t read anything into it if you aren’t asked for more than one… because it doesn’t necessarily mean you won’t get an offer… or that you will if you sing all three… But as @artskids says - be prepared!

@artskids if they ask you to sing all 3, it is just the bar cuts most likely? I know they have to be prepared with the entire song but just checking…

@missnypizza they are cuts, but be prepared for anything. My son had an audition, not BW, where he was asked to keep singing and they let him finish entire song. He had a friend who said this happened at BW. My son only sang 2 songs at BW, but was admitted. Don’t read too much into anything.

@IfYouOnlyKnew thanks so much for the advice. We do BW this Sunday. BTW - how would anyone keep singing if they only give a 32 bar cut to the pianist? My D has her music cut and taped in a folder? So would the answer here be that she should have the entire song present and only mark the cut? I know this sounds like a dumb question, but up to this point (with unifieds especially because of time constraints) no one has asked to see beyond that. Now I’m wondering if we should make a quick change to how she is presenting sheet music. What do you think?

@missnypizza - Had full song of everything in his book, but an audition cut was in front of book and marked. For his money songs he had whole song in his book. He just marked his cut clearly. That was recommended by his voice teacher because twice before (in non college audition related things) he was asked to keep singing one song past the cut. I’m also reminded that a school that only had a 2 song requirement asked him what else was in his book and picked a third song for him to sing. So please don’t take it lightly when people tell you to be prepared for anything. He had things that weren’t “part of the process” occur.

@IfYouOnlyKnew Okay!! Thank you so much for the advice. Better safe than sorry!

@missnypizza my S’s year, he sang all 3 (just 2 all the way through - at least from the beginning of his cut to the end of the song).

@artskids Thanks for the advice! Getting ready to jet…first to Emerson then to BW!

Both great programs @missnypizza! BAL.

Just want to thank everyone for the song thread. Honestly in the hustle around unifieds the week before, we had overlooked that BW required three songs - everyone else required just two. Fortunately this board jogged our memories and D was able to pull that third one up from her “repertoire” binder into her “main” audition binder, which was fortunate since she did end up singing it.

@CentralOHmomof4 Were you at BW this past Sunday?

How many bars do they ask the kids to sing? One source says 1 minute and one source says 32 bars?

@MomofMTBoy I thought I responded yesterday…but 32 bars! My D auditioned last Sunday. She had 3 prepared and they picked 2 of the 3 for her to sing.

@missnypizza no that one went to her dad but D was there. Fingers crossed for your D!

So you know, apparently Vicky is involved in a show somewhere else so I think it is their music director who is doing the song audition part of the day. BAL!

@Mardeen what does it mean if the Vicky person isn’t there? Is that negative? lol

I don’t know that it means anything but I wanted to let people know whose kids were auditioning so it wasn’t a surprise - because it was a surprise to us. It’s mentioned often here on CC that you sing before Vicky for that part of the audition.
