Yeah, I was really disappointed by that because apparently Vicky is so warm to the kids. This is another part of the process that is a mystery to me in terms of how they choose by committee. The day before BW, we were at Wright State, and they were divided into groups and auditioned in front of different faculty. I don’t know - I’m having to let it go!!!
I was wondering if any of you have suggestions and insight for auditions and song choices. I heard if your child can sing classical they should and was wondering if that is true. Thanks so much!
@Nordeal BW wants 3 songs from musical theater repertoire from which they choose 2. I assume you mean “classical” you mean a number from a classical musical (perhaps Golden Age)? You should have contrasting songs in the offering to show range so, for example, if your classical musical selection is legit soprano, you would want to add material that shows you have range, can belt, etc.! Does your D have a vocal coach?
@Nordeal - to add to what @artskids has said - BW doesn’t necessarily have you sing all three songs - you bring in 3 - and then the auditing panel picks what they want to hear from what you’ve brought. I would say the most important thing is that your D loves to sing all 3 of her selections. (and they should show contrast - a vocal coach can help with this - as @artskids states, you don’t want to walk in with 3 similar songs.)
One classic, one contemporary, and one that your child has sung in a show or otherwise knows really well and/or simply enjoys singing (yes even a Disney song). All should be contrasting in tempo and styles.
Thank you so much everyone! She does have a vocal coach and an audition coach who helped choose her music so we have a few contrasting pieces. By classical i meant an aria or art song if they are trained classically, but I think that is already answered! The request for 3 threw me a little. I really appreciate the input!!
Daughter needs to select a third piece for her BW audition. She currently has a classical and a contemporary MT piece. Could she use an art song or a classical Italian piece as her third choice or must it be MT?
@collegemom2000 i would select 3 MT pieces for the BW MT audition. An art song or foreign language piece would be more appropriate for a Vocal Performance major (who will concentratemore on an opera rep). I gave you more info in my response to your other post. The MOST important thing for BW would be that she really LOVES all three songs, and that when she sings them, that love of the song and performing shines through.
@collegemom2000 I’m going to agree with @kategrizz, my s auditioned in November for both the VP and MT programs. In all he had 6 songs, three classical pieces and three MT songs. Regardless of program they will ask you to sing 2 pieces. My S had a golden age piece, contemporary upbeat song and a third contemporary ballad. The focus is on performing your pieces with energy. BW’s audition process is incredibly well organized and all are welcoming. Feel free to contact me.
