I have found a song from Plain and Fancy that I'm really hoping to use for auditions, but I am having trouble making a 16 bar cut of it. My problem is that the tempo is "Fast in 2". This means that 16 bars feels a lot more like 8. Do you guys think that it would be acceptable at auditions if I made the cut longer for this particular song?

In general, colleges are looking for a specific amount of time, not exactly 16 bars. For 16 bars, usually you'd want to keep it about 30-45 and for 32 bars I would shoot for around 1:20-1:30. Remember, it's about quality not quantity.

As a pianist, I usually assume that 16 bars in 4 is equal to 32 bars in 2. If you're talking about "I'll Show Him", there are some 32 bar cuts that work pretty well. But Freedom is right -- most schools give you a time limit rather than a bar limit.

Most of the schools I have looked at only give a specific bar cut, but that makes a lot of sense about the time limits. Thank you for the advice!
