Looking for feedback from CC participants . My son is applying to Beloit, Early Action. He really likes Beloit. He is interested in liberal arts and/or performing arts as major.

S attends a small independent school with no class ranking and an innovative curriculum. He has a 3.5 average (unweighted). No AP classes offered. He is very interested in theatre and has done 3 plays a year for four years, at his school and at a local college. This takes about 12-15 hours per week for about 30-35 weeks annually. His other major EC, at school, is student government and he has a major leadership role this year. S will receive strong support from college counselor and teachers.

Last spring S had SAT-I scores of 640-M, 720-CR and 710-W, and SAT II score of 740-US History. He’s waiting for scores on SAT II Literature and Biology. He took the SAT I’s once, and choose to stay with those scores. Any reaction? What are his chances at Beloit?

My son is a sophomore at Beloit, and I have a senior daughter who I wish would apply (alas, she won't as she wants to go to a big school) . It is a wonderful school. I think your son's stats and ec's give him an excellent chance. Good luck to him.

My S sent in his early action application last weekend and we hope to hear good news by December 15th. S will submit a lot fewer apps if he is admitted to Beloit!

I agree with lalady -- I believe that your son has an excellent chance of being admitted early action. From your brief description of your son, he sounds like a very good fit for Beloit. When I was there (quite a few years ago) the people associated with the theatre program (both majors and non-majors) tended to be very dedicated and spend lots of time doing their thing. Good luck.

thanks for your post. S has been very interested in Beloit from the day he visited last march. I would say that he has measured every other school on his list against Beloit. While he is certain to continue theatre at Beloit he still intends to take a broad liberal arts program.

What other programs were strong when you were there?

The perceived academic strengths at Beloit when I was there included anthropology (with an emphasis on archeology), English and creative writing, geology, biology, psychology, classics, and the foreign languages.

Personally, I was a history and political science double major and I was very pleased with my education. I ended up working on Capitol Hill for about 6 years and then went to law school. One of the nice things about Beloit is that the students tend to make very strong connections with the Professors. After being out of college for six years, I had no difficulty finding Professors who: 1) remembered who I was; 2) were willing to write recommendations on my behalf; and 3) could actually remember and recite individualized accomplishments in those recommendations. To be perfectly frank, while I did well at Beloit, I was not an academic superstar (calculus and my first year made certain of that!). In retrospect, that makes the attention I received even more remarkable.

Asdad and Lalady - I can't recall if either of your children applied EA I (I think not for Lalady) but if so, do you recall when they started sending out news. My daughter applied EA I and is growing increasingly anxious as each day passes. I'm just wondering if there's any chane the news will come before December 15. If she's not in, she's planning to send out more applications. If she is accepted, she'll be very happy as Beloit is at the top of her list. Keeping fingers crossed.

S did apply to the early action program at Beloit and is also watching the mail. He had the application in by November 5th but that doesn't move up the notification time. My sense was that Beloit will send everything out on the 15th....still a long wait away!

Carolyn, my recollection is that Beloit beats its deadlines. While you are correct my son did not apply EA (he doesn't do early ANYTHING and I believe was given bad advice by his counselor when she told him not to apply EA), but I remember Brad Battaglia telling me they try to finish well before deadlines and get things in the mail early. However, I did read that EA apps were up this year, so that might slow things down. Of course I can't Beloit not taking your daughter, so hold on, it is only a few more days (yeah, like I'm the one who is waiting). I accosted the mailman daily when we were waiting for admissions decisions on my son's apps.

Well, they sure did beat the deadline - D. got her acceptance today (Dec. 12) and is so happy and excited. They wrote an amazingly personal acceptance letter, which is exactly why Beloit ended up so high on her list in the first place. I am secretly keeping my fingers crossed that she'll pick Beloit, as I think it would be a very good school for her.

S was also accepted and the letter was very personal, a fact duly noted by all. The acceptance packet asked lots of questions about student's music preferences, a plus for S.

My wife's reaction: "I guess he's really going to college isn't he?"

i was accepted today (first one, yes!) and i simply adore their acceptance packet! i love the "bravo, well done, outstanding" at the bottom. makes one feel accomplished.

does anyone know more about the presidential scholarship?

i suggest you start contacting your admissions counselor. They're really friendly. If you qualify, mail in the reply card and buy a plane ticket. Once your're there (either last weekend in jan or feb 17-18) you'll have an informal interview with the professors and get a feel for the campus. They want to give the scholarships to people they think will contribute a lot, in terms of leadership and the like.
