SOO confused about sat/act

I have always been under the impression that Brown (and pretty much all other schools that want SAT Subject tests) would either take a)the SAT Reasoning with Writing + SAT Subject tests OR b)the ACT with writing.

Under these beliefs I had planned to just focus on the ACT with Writing as my Standardized testing for Brown and other colleges. But tonight as I was looking through online information (particularly College Board) I became very confused and worried. It appeared as though colleges such as Brown, Dartmouth, and Cornell want the SAT Reasoning with Writing or the ACT with Writing as a base, and then on top of that it seemed that applicants are required to submit SAT Subject tests (regardless of which other test they submit; ACT or SAT).

So now I am very confused and worried. For these schools, and Brown in particular, do I have to submit SAT Subject tests regardless of my choice between SAT Reasoning and ACT?

OR

Can I choose between a)the SAT Reasoning with writing plus SAT Subject tests and b)the ACT plus writing?

Thanks in advance for any help.

You have to take the SAT Subject Tests regardless of whether you submit the SAT or ACT.

Sorry, Bruins, this isn't true.

The best source of information, ReadyToBeDone, is the individual college's web site -- not how someone like College Board chooses to explain things.

Brown is quite clear that with the ACT with writing you do NOT need SAT subject tests:

"Brown requires every applicant for admission to Brown in 2005-2006 to submit results of either the SAT Reasoning Test and any two SAT Subject Tests (except for the SAT Writing Test), or the ACT taken with the Writing Test option."

http://www.brown.edu/Administration/Admission/applyingtobrown/abouttheapplication.html

This is the same language they've had for some years. My daughter is an incoming Brown sophomore and she didn't submit any SAT IIs.

I haven't looked up Dartmouth or Cornell. I know other Ivies do vary in their policies -- for instance, with Yale and Penn you don't need subject tests with the ACT, whereas at Harvard and Princeton you do. So again, look at what they web sites say. (They will also tell you if the tests are "recommended," even if not required. Brown has no such language.)

DianeR,

If ReadyToBeDone is looking into Brown, Dartmouth, and Cornell, then he or she has to take Subject Tests. Depending on which college he or she is planning on applying to at Cornell, different subject test(s) are required/recommended. I know this because I actually looked into Cornell a year ago though I didn´t apply. Hence, I wrote ¨You have to take the SAT Subject Tests regardless of whether you submit the SAT or ACT. I don´t know anything about Dartmouth.

This is a Brown forum, so probably the poster was looking for information about Brown, not Dartmouth. Brown does not require SAT Subject tests. It just increases confusion to post inaccurate information.

I said Brown doesn't require SAT subject tests, and I hadn't looked up the other two schools. The OP said the primary interest was Brown and this is the Brown forum. What I said was accurate. To say that someone interested in Brown has to take subject tests is not.

As I made clear with examples, schools vary on this subject.

Well I´m sorry if I offended anyone. Again, I was under the impression that ReadyToBeDone was also looking into Darmouth and Cornell as he or she did write:

¨For these schools, and Brown in particular, do I have to submit SAT Subject tests regardless of my choice between SAT Reasoning and ACT?¨

Hence, it just makes more sense to take the SAT Subject Tests regardless of Brown´s policy. Thus, I wrote that ReadyToBeDone has to take the Subject Tests regardless of SAT or ACT submission.

Really? I could have sworn that Brown wanted 3 subject tests.......?

Not offended at all, Bruins. Now I think we are all clear ... except for bigwhammy18 :) Don't go confusing things again -- Brown doesn't require subject tests if one submits the ACT with writing. Period.

Well, if one actually reads carefully, then... :)

Honestly, it's not that hard to find out any schools policy. GO TO THEIR WEBSITE FOR UNDERGRADUATE ADMISSION...OBVIOUSLY THEY HAVE THEIR REQUIREMENTS THERE
