Soon to be Freshman, when and what should I study?

Hello everyone, I am going to be a freshman in college this fall, and would like to spend my summer doing something to prepare for the MCAT.
In high school, I've had extensive courses in biology. However, I have not been able to take Chemistry AP, nor have I even set foot in a class that was Physics related.
I know for sure I'll be taking these classes ASAP, but as for this summer, I would like to know if I should be doing any MCAT Prep.
I've looked around and it seems like I shouldn't actually be prepping until about 4-6 months before the actual MCAT, but I want to be productive this summer, and see if I can learn some Chemistry and Physics, and maybe even prepare for the Verbal/Writing.
I don't plan on paying for any courses, so which self-study books would you recommend?
Keep in mind that I have a poor foundation in Chemistry and Physics, and would like to not only prepare for the MCAT, but maybe be slightly ahead for the actual college courses.

Also, besides MCAT prep, what else should I be doing to help my chances for Med School?
and if it makes a difference, I'll be attending UC Riverside in the fall.

Well, it seems like you’re taking it seriously.
I would have never thought about starting preparing that soon, but you’re doing the right thing.
Thing is, that the science sections of the MCAT are something you are about to encounter in your introductory courses, so i’d wait a little with that. The verbal reasoning section and writing sample are something you have to overcome independently, 'cause no college course focuses on these skills.
Start by practicing verbal passges. I personally liked testprep-online’s verbal sections and guide, they have all the ins and outs of this section, and actually, in a way it is the section which is most satisfying to learn for, since it relies on pure logic, without any scientific prerequisites.
