Sooner Orientation Weekend Questions

According to the SOW website:

There is a parents session on Thursday and nothing for parents on Friday that I can see.

Do parents go to the New Sooner Convocation at Lloyd Noble Center?
Are parents invited to the Sooner Orientation Cookout on Thursday?
Is there any event(s) on Friday that parents may want to attend?

Thanks sunnyday! I came here to ask that exact same question. Also, have you or your student received the specific move-in time information that they mention on the website? We have not, but I was wondering if maybe we’ve missed it? I’ve emailed the school/housing office but I haven’t heard back yet. I also asked the question about the events for Sooner Orientation Weekend. If I get a response I’ll post back here!

Mansfield-You’re welcome. I don’t think my son has received any move-in time information yet.

Anyone has any comments about the orientation events for the parents? Just wonder whether we should stick around or not after the move-in.

My parents did not stay at all after I was finished moving in. I liked it because then I didn’t have any obligations to see them while I was trying to meet people and get situated. There wasn’t anything vital that my parents missed and I don’t think they regretted leaving. We did also live out of state though, so they had a long drive ahead of them.

Woolscarves I appreciate that input. We too have a long drive ahead of us and if we stay Thursday night that means a 3rd day of vacation off of work. That leaves less vacation days available for me to visit during the school year or when he’s at home, so that’s what we’re weighing now. Thanks for chiming in.

Nothing here in the mail yet regarding move-in times.
It’s weird that we have to report first to the parking lot at Lloyd Noble Center just to check in. Initially the plan was to arrive there at the specified time, be unloaded by movers, and then shuttled to dorms. The current plan seems to have unnecessary driving. Anyway.

We are planning to attend the Parent Session, so I’ll update with important deets if there are any. We are not planning to stick around past this event.

I’ve searched the website and I can’t find anything about the Parent Session on move-in day. Can someone give me the time/location or send me a link?

Correct me if I’m wrong, but it’s my understanding they want us at Lloyd Noble so that we hand over ALL our boxes and stuff to be moved in to the dorms to movers who will be waiting there. The movers take the boxes to the dorms and then we meet up there to unpack/arrange. There is so much construction in and around the campus (and in Norman in general) that it’s mind boggling to think about. This is somehow supposed to help with that … I think.

Here is the Orientation Weekend Schedule. The Parent Session is at 1:00 on August 20.

Here’s where it explains the Move-In Day procedure. We go first to Lloyd Noble Center parking lot, then we’ll be unloaded at the dorms.

Thank you both. That’s going to be a long day!

I should also mention this: Orientation weekend is usually very optional. Many of the activities are only applicable fora certain group of students. Almost nothing is mandatory either. I don’t think we were even required to go to convocation (I did, it was a verrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrry long speech from President Boren). Your children shouldn’t feel pressured to go to any events if they have something else to be doing. I remember it was a busy time where I met a lot of new friends and tried a lot of the restaurants and saw the campus.

Last year - my D was ready for me to leave by early afternoon. I did go to the parent session at 1:00, then said goodbye. She and her new roommate headed off for the convocation with a group from her dorm, and I hit the road for home.

@tikimom, was there new information given in the parent session that you hadn’t already heard/found?

Some of the info was definitely review, but I remember thinking it was worth going though I don’t recall particulars. That day is a bit of a blur!

Just saw this today - “10 Easy Steps to OUMoveIn15”. Looks like you start at Lloyd Noble Center then go to residence hall then go back to Lloyd Noble Center then take a shuttle bus back to the residence hall where you get the key and then unpack.
