Sooo the meaning of life is just= survive + reproduce

my 2 cents on philosophy.

hardwired into us since we were born. Survival instincts are honed after years of evolution.

I live in a nice neighborhood so survival is easy. Now the goal of procreation seems to be the only logical explanation of everything we do.

Get good grades>Good job>Good money> BIG house BIG Car> lotsa women

explains why people are so competitive, such as for valedictorian as it makes them the "alpha male". Also explains compassion. No act is selfless, as the satisfaction from doing good deeds is because you raised your attractive points.

Humans are just like our animals, and for all we know in terms of knowledge of the universe, we are programmed to continue the human race and to spread our seed, for whatever unknown reason.

I'm sure Wilt Chamberlain was a happy man.

what do you guys think?

That sounds great until you consider the people who are very happy with their lives and are completely childless.

What if you did it in secret?

The meaning of life is what you make it; there’s no objective answer to that question.

If you wanna subscribe to the nihilist philosophy that there’s no meaning, go for it, because objectively it’s true. However, life–as in the human experience–is not objective, so it’s not a very practical worldview.

@ Harry Jones
I think helping others is also sort of a dominance thing. Boosting up the alpha male thing

Also explains why people are so adamant in debates like Science and Religion. Alpha male dominance?

@Francis
Yep, I"m putting procreation as my meaning. Seems to be the only logical thing that can cope with an existential crisis

^How do you explain women helping others out?

Sure if you wanna get down into the dirty technicalities, altruism is at some level “selfish.” But who cares? Altruism is altruism; it does help others, and it does do good for the world.

@misteranthony I don’t recommend living such a shallow life; I’d incorporate it, but also include all of the other wonderful experiences the world has to offer :)

They’re lesbians, clearly.

Not because these subjects are very personal?

^And straight women aren’t really people.

Life makes sense now.

I’m just using attraction as the explanation for all acts.

Women do it altruistic things to make them more attractive to the opposite gender. Goes along with makeup, plastic surgery, and everything else. To the eye beauty signals intelligence and health, ideal for breeding.

But damn it if reproducing isn’t fun as hell

lol I was kinda hoping this would be more philosophy oriented where we would share ideas instead of focusing just the one.
Like you said Francis, life is what you make of it. Everything we do is to attract the opposite gender, so the goal in life might as well be reproduction. lol it’s not THAT shallow …
@HarryJones: Idk I see it more like this:
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/high-school-life/1042850-i-truly-believe-everybodys-perspective-world.html</a>
The picture that was editted was supposed to show ppl in a bus with the same thought bubble of them believing they are superior to the rest of the people on the bus. Since most people believe they are more intelligent than others , they believe their viewpoint is correct. In terms of survival and reproduction, opposing beliefs jeopardize their self-worth and in instinct they argue back to regain their esteem. (Like what I’m doing …)

My name isn’t Francis. It’s Matt. Just wanted to make that clear…

But my self-ordained purpose of teaching others the joy of French isn’t so I can get laid.

^ Well thats my viewpoint,… sorry for the name confusion…

Im curious what do you live for ?

^Well be prepared to contest it. I’m not saying it’s wrong, I’m just saying it’s too general, too sweeping. I want to say “incomplete,” but that’s not quite right.

Well, obviously I’m only 17 and so haven’t lived enough to know fully what I live for, but a few things I guess. French, poetry, the beauty of humanity, the beauty of the world. I guess. It sounds flowery because, again, I haven’t lived that long :P

Why do people use birth control when having casual sex?

Natural selection. A sperm should be able to fight it’s way though a condom or else it doesn’t deserve to reproduce.

HAHAHAHAHAHA

To the OP: If procreation is the sole purpose of life, why isn’t education seen as negative, since it correlates strongly with a lower fertility rate?

Er, because correlation doesn’t imply causation?

How could education lower fertility rate?

@matt: In many ways. Better educated people tend to spend more time in their careers and less time raising families, for instance. This paper has some speculation:

http://www.prb.org/pdf/IsEducat-Contracept_Eng.pdf</a></p>

If the purpose of life is to reproduce, and uneducated people do so more effectively, then why doesn’t everyone want to be uneducated?

I’m gay and I currently do not think that I will want children.
