So, can anyone please explain to me on picking my schedule and everything? I'm so lost as to what classes I need to take/what I get to choose from. They're like you need this, this and this. And then you need another of the following 8 but they are all mandatory, huhh?! Do we take our PE classes now too? Should I schedule that?

Also, I'm in HSS. Do I need to take a science? It'd be really awesome if someone could just tell me like you need to pick a math class first sem, along with computing, english, blah blah blah and this second semester and break it down. I'm almost confused of the level of the classes. They're like you need this level of "x" class for all freshman (or w/e the requirement is) but then they show higher levels too that I can pick from and tell me to pick another too? So I take the required one and get to pick another? They way they explain it is so confusing! Maybe I'm just totally dumb, sorry... :(

Ok, so you’re in HSS - are you considering applying to any double major programs, like Tepper, CFA, HCI, et cetera, that you would be applying to at the end of your freshman year? What is your primary major? That’ll allow me to help you a little better. :)

(sidenote: there is no PE class at CMU. Otherwise we’d be much less of a nerd school and campus would be generally way sexier.)

For HSS, it is heavily suggested that you take 3 of the 5 “freshman 5” courses your first semester. These courses are C@CM, World History, Statistics (36201), Interpretation & Argument, and a Freshman Seminar. I would definitely recommend getting C@CM out of the way, as most kids take it the first half of first semester. The rest is up to you. The order in which you complete the freshman 5 is not important. you do not need to take a science or a math first year at all in HSS, aside from statistics. Those are just basic requirements that you must complete before you graduate.

So that’s 2 out of 5 classes. As for the other three - as soon as I know your major and potential double major I can help a bit more.

There’s no REQUIRED PE class…but a wonderful choice of OPTIONS every semester-- they are offered full semester and half semesters (mini 1 or mini 2). All P/F

Yes, you add them now when you register. You can always drop them. Expect that many of the more popular ones are already filled by upperclassmen who have already registered for classs…Yoga…

African-Caribbean Dance

Some of the PE classes are awesome, admittedly. (African-Caribbean dance is actually just a Zumba class craftily re-named, for example.) But be forewarned that they do apparently cost money, something I didn’t know until after I’d signed up. Although… I’ve never seen this anywhere on the actual site, just been told by other students, so it could be not true I suppose.

Wow, thanks so far everyone! Why on earth I thought we needed 2 PE classes… Idk, but I was SO sure we had to. But I still really do want to take golf… Do I need to bring my own clubs?

And I’ll be an International Relations major but I’m thinking of doubling up with finance in Tepper. Should I be looking into what I’ll need for finance too and get some prereqs out of the way?

By finance I’m assuming you mean business? Tepper only has a 4-year degree in comp finance. To my knowledge there is no actual finance degree that you could take as a double major, just Business or Econ.

IR and Tepper’s freshman schedule are actually fairly compatible. Here’s what I would recommend for your three remaining class spots:

Take a Calc class. DiffEq (21-120) is advised since it satisfies both Econ and IR basic prereqs.

Pick two IR electives or core classes that you, personally, enjoy. I wouldn’t pick 2 core classes at the same time, maybe 1 core and 1 elective. The list is here: [Major in International Relations and Politics | International Relations & Politics Program, Carnegie Mellon University](<a href=“Carnegie Mellon Institute for Security and Technology - Carnegie Mellon Institute for Security and Technology - Carnegie Mellon University”>Carnegie Mellon Institute for Security and Technology - Carnegie Mellon Institute for Security and Technology - Carnegie Mellon University)

It’s hard to get through first semester-- or any semester, really-- if you don’t have one or two classes that are “just for you” and don’t necessarily satisfy a major requirement. For me, that’s my game design class, for example :)

I’m a little confused. Are you supposed to be picking classes already now? I’m in CFA, btw.

It depends - what section of CFA are you in?

How should I fit in Spanish?

Take a spanish core class in place of one of the two core IR classes or electives. You’re in HSS, so everything is pretty customizable. Don’t worry too much about picking the “wrong” classes first semester, because you’ve got plenty of elective room.
