Anyone else got screwed over this college admission season?
Some surprising waitlist from my target schools.
Expected Rejects from my reaches.

To the schools i did get into, barely got any aid. (Boston U gave me 10 grand for their 50k school - thanks but FU)
I'm hearing its been a tough year.
I feellll sooo down right now.
Can someone please tell me the good things about Stony?

you can transfer out if you keep your grades up. PM me if you want ideas for easy classes, profs to watch out for, etc and general transferring out of SB help.

SBU is a top SUNY school, and there is abundant opportunity for you to excel. Your success is not about what school you go to, but what you do with the hand you’re dealt. The character you build by doing what is necessary, what is smart, will shape your future more than getting into a popular school in an expensive city. Yout character is more a product of your difficult challenges anything else. Your in college to work. You will not have any debt. Debt is a crushing burden for many when they finish school. Try to focus on the positive and the exciting time ahead. These will be the best years of your life.

Hey, SAT1prep, I’m pretty much in the same boat.

I got waitlisted from my top choice, waitlisted from my low reaches/targets and I’m expecting a couple of rejections come April Fools Day ): I would like to go to NYU cas, but i’d be taking out 33k in loans… A YEAR.

So you’re not alone.

Well, Stony is a great school for pre/med and biological sciences. If you want to be a doctor, apparently it’s the place to be because of their hospital and brookhaven national lab… a lot of research and volunteer opportunities.

Stony Brook is easy to get into, but I hear there are a lot of smart kids who couldn’t afford to attend more prestigious schools. It’s cheap for the quality.

No shame in going to your safety school if it’s a decent state uni I guess…

I still have not heard from SBU but I have not gotten into one school except my safety so I maybe going to SBU and transferring or going to my safety and transferring.

heyy guys, same here ): stony was my safety, but for financial reasons i’m coming here. i didnt want to get out of undergrad with a load of debt. i was wondering if any of you have an idea of Stony’s College of Business. I know Stony’s known for its sciences but have you guys ever heard about their business programs? Good? Bad?

suggestions please? (:

for me, it was either stony- pay 7k for college of business or baruch- free ride. but the fact that baruch’s a CUNY just bothers me. ( i know this isnt the right mindset) despite their high reputation in their business program.

I’m in your situation, too. I didn’t get into my #1 (Columbia), could never ever afford my #2 (NYU). But I’m not TOTALLY bummed about Stony Brook - I visited a couple of weeks ago; the campus doesn’t look half bad, it’s only an hour and a half from NYC, and the surrounding area (Port Jeff, Smithtown, etc.) seems really nice. Also, according to my friend who’s a current freshman, almost everyone at SBU is in our situation (either didn’t get into or can’t afford their top choice), so people can relate.

i guess stony isn’t that bad for its price. and we can always transfer out the following years if our grades allow. but i was wondering, do you know anything about their college of business? i heard it’s not that strong of a school. i have to make a decision in a couple of weeks, and i don’t want to choose the wrong school ): ( Help please?? )

This is really silly of you guys. Undergraduate school does not really matter, what matters is how much debt you have and what your grades are.

You can go to the University of Alabama get all A’s have very little loans and then apply to DreamSchool for graduate studies. In today’s economy a bachelor degree is the bare minimum so most of the goal oriented individuals that go to collegeconfidential.com will end up in graduate schools anyways.

If you have 100k+ debt from undergraduate studies and add to that 100k+ debt for graduate studies, upon graduation you are screwed and in a deep deep hole of debt.

Stony Brook is cheap, Stony Brook is by no means a bad school, ultimatley any school is going to be what YOU choose to make of it.

If you are shy and plan on sitting in your dorm all semester you are going to do that regardless if you are in harvard or stony brook. If you like to party, you will find someone to party with, etc.

thanks a lot for the advice! (: it really makes me, and i’m sure others feel a lot better about our decision.

but i was also wondering, is 7k a lot for stony? i mean, it’s not a lot if i’m paying 7k for a private university, but for stony, do you think it’s worth it?

Raychacha - I visited the campus this year for the fist time since the early 1980’s, and I was really impressed (and shocked) with the landscaping and overall beauty. In the early 80’s the place was a hellhole. It was hard to find a blade of grass. Ugliest campus I had ever seen. Kudos to whoever was responsible for the turnaround.

yea. but i was just wondering whether 7k was worth it for stony because it’s not that known for its business program. meanwhile, baruch is well known and it’s free ):
i’m so indecisive, and i’m not sure which one to pick ):

I disagree with the idea that the Stony brook business program is better than the Baruch program. In fact the Baruch program is much superior to Stony Brook busines. If you do decide to go to Stony Brook major in Engineering or Mathematics but dont go to their business program. If you want to go into accounting go with Baruch cause for that major undergrad does matter alot. If I knew what kind of business you plan on doing I can give you a better idea but here accounting (baruch), finance(stony brook major in engineering/physic/applied mathematics MBA later on), Marketing (baruch).

same. I can relate so much to all of you. It really sucks having to go to the “safety” school but I’ve got nowhere else to go lol; what’s even worse is that I live so close, that I’ll have to stay home and commute - not the college experience I wanted =(

You’re all talking like it’s the end of the world. Stony Brook is far from a bad school, and it has a plethora of academic resources that many other schools don’t have. If you didn’t want to come here, you should have applied to a different “safety” school, such as Bing or Buffalo. Some people are actually happy here and choose to be here over “better” (read: more competitive) schools. If you really don’t want to go here, don’t. Apply to your “match” schools for the Spring semester and get job experience in the mean time.
