Sophie Davis Pgm.

im currently going into my senior year in high school and im very interested in the SD program. what is the SAT/ACT score requirement for this program? I understand its a very competetive program but i want to take my chances on applying.

Plus there are programs out of U.S. in the carribean and poland that take students right out of high school. But my concern is that if i do this and want to come back to U.S. for clinical rotation and residency, would i be locked out of alot of hospitals? Please give me as much advise as you canā€¦

Jammers12 --from everything Iā€™ve heard there is really no SAT/ACT requirement for Sophie, correct me if Iā€™m wrong anyone. Of course a higher score can only help you. With that said, from all whom Iā€™ve had the pleasure to talk to, whether it be applicants who got in as well as admission officers, they have all stated that most kids in the program have attained a 1300 or better on the SATs. I canā€™t answer what the ACT requirement for the lone reason that I have never heard anyone talk about ACT scores other than the ACT Cuny Math test that has to be taken during the application process. This is why anyone looking to get into Sophie should concentrate more so on their SATs rather than the ACTs. Unfortunately, the sad news is that a high SAT score does not necessarily guarantee an applicant admission as shown by knavarathna92ā€™s stats a couple of posts back.

Sohpie probably considers a solid candidate to be one taking the highest courses offered at his or her school ( Honors courses, AP courses) as well as having good grades in all of them (85 +). One who volunteers regularly in oneā€™s own community. One who has had health care exposure and experience in hospitals and nursing homes ( volunteering, shadowing, and research) One who is active in oneā€™s school (leading/creating clubs, awards, positions and offices held). One who is in the top 10% of oneā€™s graduating class. And lastly, being able to sell and solidify yourself through your essay. Even if you lack some of the qualities stated above, you are given a chance in your essay to truly show them why you deserve a spot in the program. And above all Sophie wants to know that you CARE about becoming a doctor and ready to dedicate your life for Medicine.

And as far as going out of the States for your MD degree such as the Caribbean and Poland, try to stay away from them especially if your future plans involves practicing in the US. Although they do offer some solid programs, they DO NOT PREPARE YOU FOR YOUR USMLE!!!, or you license to practice medicine in the U.Sā€¦ This goes for any International MD course. This is is because these international courses do not have pre-med, but rather delve straight into what a Med student would do in Med school. Not saying that it is impossible for an international Med student to pass their USMLE, but it is definitely a tremendous task that may force you to sacrifice a couple of years or two WITHOUT even completing your internships and fellowship!!!

If you feel like the MD degree is too much for you, not saying that it is or anything, but maybe the DO (Doctor of Osteopathy) degree may be to your liking. Its really not as competitive as an MD degree but I guess it does lack slight bragging rights as opposed to the MD. If you want more info on the DO feel free to message me.

Hope this Helps!!!

uhm im a junior in h.s when do i apply to this program?

Well you can apply during your Senior year. But donā€™t wait until the last minute. Get a Sophie Davis application and read the requirements and see how you would stack up against it. If you feel like your missing an element or two, now is the time to strengthen your weak points and establish yourself as a solid candidate. Remember that its more than just grades with Sophie. They look at the applicant as a whole.

Can you apply to CUNY Honors at another campus as well as apply to Sophie Davis? It seems like if you fill out the CUNY application online and you apply to CUNY Honors, it wonā€™t allow me to apply to City College regular. Can any current students that know what Iā€™m talking about please help me out. Thanks - itā€™s very much appreciated!

Hi, I am a high school graduate (class of 2009) who grew up in NYC, but moved to San Diego in the middle of high school because of family issues. However, because of a remaining address in NYC, I am on a NYC tax return and am eligible for participation in the Sophie Davis program. If anyoneĀ—graduates, participants, or other applicants can view my stats it would be greatly appreciated, as would other tips and/or advice.

Also, bear in mind, for hereditary reasons, I have been studying abroad for the 2009-2010 year, so I am applying for fall of 2010 because SD wonā€™t let me defer. During my travels I worked for 132 hours as an EMT on an Israeli ambulance, and just got my medicĀ’s certification, and will continue working on the ambulance for a few more months. I will also be participating in a two month Israeli army training-simulation program.

SAT- 1910, 1240 on the CR and Math. (I know, IĀ’m not the best test taker)
ACT- 31

SAT 2: Math II- 640
US History- 580 (I know, not my best choice)

APs: AP Music theory- could not afford to take the AP exam, but got a 91 in the class both semesters
AP Calculus AB- 5
AP US History- 3
AP Calculus BC-4
AP United States Government and Politics-5
AP United States Government, will probably get a 5 or 4

ECs: Leadership roles:
-club president (invisible children/Uganda awareness)
-asb (tenth grade president)- talent show co organizer
-surf team treasurer / co-founder
-Surf club treasurer
Religous Youth Group:
3 years member of new York and san diego. poway representative of san diego chapter board.

Music- orchestra 3rd seat bassist. Most improved musician 2007-08. Unanimous superior judging in multiple concerts

Martial Arts- Eighth Kyu ranking award

Sports- baseball tenth grade
-Surf Tea 12th grade

Awards- lions awards. Wolverine Senior Acomplishment Award, Principal honors award
-graphic design projects displayed in art show
(and hopefully others which I am forgetting)

Volunteer work- Hundreds of hours with multiple organizations and causes

In the Medical Field:
-I worked in an OBGYN office on Staten Island one summer
-I volunteered for 250+ hours at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center Brooklyn Campus. There I worked in the operating room where I observed countless fascinating surgeries, and I wheeled patients too ICU, etc, to the OR, and from the OR to recovery. I also observed a dermatology clinic. I also worked in EKG and hooked patents up to machines, etc.
-When I moved, I continued volunteering in hospitals, specifically with a cardiothoracic surgeon in one of the nationā€™s leading medical technology centers, participating in similar activities but focused mostly on cardiology and respiratory.

-School tutoring- Tutor in Algebra, Algebra 2, Geometry, physics, calculus AB calc BC

I am Bilingual (English and Hebrew), have experience living on my own. Have lived overseas volunteering in the medical field. Have experienced great events and situations not possible in the US (responding to a terror attack, inserting IV not as a paramedic or nurse). I have been exposed to the good and bad aspects of multiple healthcare systems, allowing me to advocate my beliefs with more concrete clause.

Thatā€™s as much as I can think of now. Also, I am a disabled student and have overcome many obstacles which many deemed impossible (this explains the poor test scores). Iā€™m not sure if this will help me, but itā€™s the truth of the matter.

Anyway, Thank you to all who have reviewed (and survived reading ^_^) my stats and give me feedback, advice, or suggestions. I really appreciate your help. I am extremely determined to become a physician, and it wasnā€™t soon enough when I learned about this program, so thank you for your help.

Also, congratulations to all those who get accepted to Sophie Davis this year!!!
Thank you

Well it appears that your extracurricular activities are pretty good but you did not list your gpa anywhere. Sophie looks for a 85+ average, but Iā€™m sure your well ahead of that. Also, you should try to get your SAT scores up because I donā€™t think a 1240 will get you in ( the writing section is not looked at I donā€™t think). Since your disability may have been a factor toward your grades, as you said, it may be wise to mention it in your essay, as you probably might have already. Good Luck!

Would graduating at the top of your class be in any way beneficial?

Going to open house tomorrow, anyone else?

I go to a school that offers only 3 APs, im taking all 3, but would that have any negative effect on my application?

gshak13- No matter what highly selective college you look at, they all expect you to take the most challenging courses as possible. Obviously some schools offer more challenging courses than others, so you will be expected to take whatever is offered. It also depends on what exactly the course is. Donā€™t take an AP just because you can, take it because its something you are interested in and becuase it ties in with what you are going to take in college and ultimately your future career plans.

You also asked whether graduating from the top of the class would be beneficial. I would say yes and no. Sure its going to help you stick out during the application process, but whatā€™s really going to separate you from the pack is your passion in Medicine as it should be demonstrated through your essays and activities. You can be a perfect student with perfect grades but can still be rejected without showcasing this passion.

gshack13ā€¦i was there yesterdayā€¦the anatomy lab was really coolā€¦the fully disected human!

I went to the open house too. Even though I didnā€™t have the privilege of taking the tours of the labs, I was able to talk to the current students. I was surprised that most of the students were all really laid back and friendly. They didnā€™t have that arrogant persona that I was expecting either. They answered almost every question I threw out at them and got back very good feedback, even with very specific questions. I really hope I get an interview!!! anyone else go?

Iceman. You should of saw the anatomy labā€¦Amazing.

can anyone tell me what happens if I apply to the sophie davis program but get rejected? Will I still be able to go into City college ?

Hey, So now that I have all the stuff I need for my app (feels great to have everything done btw) I was hoping someone could chance me.

AVG - 90.6/100 or a 3.62/4 unweighted (Class is unranked)

APs:
AP Euro -5
AP U.S. -5
AP Bio -5
Currently taking AP Japanese, AP Calc AB and AP Physics B

Regents:
Biology : 95

Activities:

ran a survey for the human resources department

Awards:
Japanese honor society member since sophomore year
AP scholar

About me: I donā€™t necessarily have any religious bias towards a particular social/scientific platform as my dad is Buddhist and my Mom is Catholic so I consider myself pretty diverse in that sense. Iā€™m probably also one of the few south asians youā€™ll meet who can speak Japanese at a reasonable level.

Thanks for everyone who took the time to read this.

BTW, for people that went to the open house: I thought it was informative but only after the Q and A started. I felt the speeches were nice, but just dragged on the whole thing for too long.

Man I wish i can speak japanese lol. Well knavarathna i hope your sri lankan becuase you probably will get in since you would be a minority and have good credentials. Iā€™m unfortunately an Indianā€¦sighā€¦so its not looking so good for meā€¦ Donā€™t worry bout your chem regents too much because you seem to be overqualified in other areas which would allow them to let you slide. If i were you i would take the Chem SAT II just in case, I dont think itā€™s too late for you to take it. Remember to concentrate on your essay as wellā€¦

Yeah you have the interview (as long as those essays are good) your fineā€¦from then onā€¦its all about the interviewā€¦btwā€¦they donā€™t look at the writing section of the SATā€¦and 3 SAT2s are sufficient enoughā€¦any more and it would feel that your just packing in tests to make yourself look better lol

By any chanceā€¦would being Turkish be considered a minority?

I would think so Andy. If your not Indian or Chinese then your probably good. And I hope you understand that minority in this context refers to the nationalities that are underrepresented in Medicine and not minority in general.

Yes I do. But it always counts to be something different =p.
