<p>I applied to the MD program. And I call them again, last Friday and they will mail out a new decision letter…</p>
<p>Did anybody get any news from the dental program yet? I called and they said they were still deciding and that was last week Thursday, 4/5/12.</p>
<p>Hi, I just want to see what my chances are at getting into Sophie Davis and I was hoping those who may have got accepted could tell me whether or not i have a shot.</p>
<p>GPA: 92.00 (rather low)
SAT: Critical Reading: 630
Math: 780
Writing: 650 (Retaking SAT in June)
SAT IIs: Math II 750
Physics 720
Biology 730
ACT: 33
Extra Curricular: Ive volunteered at a private doctors firm shadowing him for a year now.
-volunteered at a senior center to help the elderly.
-volunteered at the workers union
-have also gone in and worked with patients at another doctors firm alongside a doctor
Not many school related activities though, other than key club and varsity basketball and baseball.</p>
<p>Do I have a decent shot at getting an interview to Sophie Davis? Its been bugging me alot and I havent been able to find many stats on the average scores of those accepted.</p>
<p>TanvirA,
I think you definitely have a chance of getting an interview/getting in. Only thing i would suggest is getting your SAT reading and writing higher since your GPA is in the low 90s. My sister got an interview with them (however got rejected at the end of the process) and she had a 95.5 gpa, 2200 on SAT, over 8 APs throughout her highschool years. Her ACT was only a 30. She had only 1 club because she spent most of her time in the Intel program. My friend that got in, 10 years ago, had a low 90 gpa so i know you definitely have a shot. Keep up with the volunteer and sports. You want to stand out from the rest of the thousands of applicants. Show that in your still working hard in your senior year, dont take easy classes, push yourself to be more :). Good luck.</p>
<p>Tanvir,
Yes! You have a wonderful chance of getting in. Don’t worry too much on the GPA. I would suggest that you take the SAT’s over again and focus on the reading/writing and really work hard for the ACT and get like a 33+ in September.
Also, remember that grades are not everything, especially for Sophie Davis. Your interview and essays are very important. One can even say that those are more important than the grades because they give a holistic idea of the person.
Good luck!!</p>
<p>I hope this thread did not die out. I need some help too!</p>
<p>What are my chances in getting into Sophie Davis Stony Brook or NYU division?</p>
<p>GPA: 91 unweighted, 96~97 weighted.
SAT: 2210 (Reading 710, Math 800, Writing 700)
ACT: 33 (Do they superscore ACT? Because I got a 36 on Reading and 36 on Math, but on two different tests. Superscored would get me 34~35)
SATII:
-MathII- 750
-US History- 750
-First Bio was 680, planning on taking it again for the 800
AP:
-AP Euro- 4
-AP US History- 5
-AP Biology- 5
-AP Statistics- 3 :(</p>
<p>Curriculum: Long Island school (big focus around APs here)
Current APs taken: Bio, USH, Euro, Stat
Future APs: US gov, Econ, Calculus BC (I can’t take Physics AP because it coincides with orchestra)</p>
<p>Extracurricular Activities:
Member of a NY Youth orchestra and toured with the orchestra around Europe for charity
black belt in kendo (martial arts), gold medalist at Philadelphia National championship and silver medalist at San Francisco National championship
member of Global Awareness club, Tri-M Music Honors society, Foreign language Honors society, Medical Explorers, DECA, Astronomy club
All County + LISFA participant for numerous years, 100 on All-State (hoping to get into the All-State orchestra)
Participant of the Korean-American parade for 2 years.
Cultural trip to Korea to learn traditional Korean folk music</p>
<p>Volunteer work:
Hours from participating in church orchestra (I might not be able to get the hours since I misplaced the certificate)
160 hours as a group leader in Korea, and tutored English for the local Korean children
Volunteer at Flushing Hospital
Volunteer for Haiti fundraising event
(I should get 300+ hours in total)</p>
<p>Leadership position:
Secretary for Global Awareness Club
Captain of kendo club</p>
<p>Ethnicity is Korean, but I don’t think that helps.</p>
<p>I fall flat in terms of GPA and leadership/extracurricular activities. I’ve been told this numerous of times that I’m getting worried.</p>
<p>What are my chances?</p>
<p>I have a few questions about Sophie Davis, and I can’t seem to find it on Google.
- By becoming a primary care doctor, am I limited to patient care? Am I not allowed to specialize in areas such as gastroenterology, internal medicine, anesthesiology, and surgery?
- How hard is it to get into Sophie Davis? I heard it is very selective with only 60~80 getting picked.
- Many colleges have supplementary essays that must be added with your college essay. For Sophie Davis, is it 1 college essay and 2 supplementary essays or 3 college essays? I worked pretty hard on my single essay, and I’m not sure if I have the material for another two.
- Does being a Sophie Davis accepted student hinder your college social life? I’ve read it on a lot of college forums, and I am afraid to lose the social part of college.</p>
<p>IM is considered primary care I think. Some schools charge you a fine/extra tuition if you go outside of primary care, depends on the institution.</p>
<p>Hi ASHBASH123,
I also have scored 2200 on my SAT with 1430 for (CR+M) and 32 on ACT. My GPA weighted is around 3.68 and I have as many AP as possible, volunteer hours in a hospital and extra curriculars, etc. I am planning to apply to Sophie Davis and i would like to know if I will have any chances of getting it.</p>

<p>Sophie Davis is difficult to get into but not impossible. I say ur grades are definitely good for Sophie. They do however strongly stress volunteer/community work. So the interview and the essays are just as important as grades.</p>
<p>Hi so im a junior right in syosset high school and im planning to apply to the sophie davis program. I was wondering if i can get in even though my scores arent so great because my aunt has previously attended the program and she will write me a recomendation.
I havent taken my sats yet but i plan to get a minimum of a 2100 and my gpa right now is a 90.
I have taken many aps and will take many more aps.
I will also take the bio and math 2 sat2.
During the summer before senior year i will do many volunteer hours at a hospital/clinic.
I have been working at a teaching center from beginning of 10th grade.
Do you think i have any chances?
Also, my aunts younger brother had applied to the program and with a 89 gpa and a 1800 sat score and a recomendation he got called to the interviews. However he didnt get accepted.
What are my chances? Especially due to the recomendation.</p>
<p>Since you are a junior, just worry about doing the best u can on the SATs and remember to take the ACT. Grades aren’t the most important thing since there are so many with good and very good grades. It’s important to have an experience or activity that u feel passionate talking about and u believe is important in ur pursuit of medicine</p>
<p>To answer benskim’s questions
- Upon admission, u have to sign an agreement saying u will work 2 years as a primary care doc (OB GYN, Internal med, Family med) in a physician shortage area in NY. If u violate the contract, you owe the school $75,000. </p>
<p>2) Sophie does accept about 65-70 applicants which is pretty good compared to other BS/MD programs. Although close to 1000 apply, if one has good grades and shows a strong interest in medicine and involvement in community or health care related activities, there is a strong chance of getting an interview and being that much closer to acceptance. </p>
<p>3) There are 3 essays for Sophie, that u can view by creating a VIP account on their website. One essay asks to describe an experience that made u interested in pursuing medicine. The second asks to describe a volunteer experience. The last is about a social, political or economic issue that society faces and how it can be solved. </p>
<p>4) There are gonna be many weekends where ur gonna have to be behind the books instead of going out with friends. However, Sophie students are very friendly and close-knit and there are several parties and social activities for Sophie students each year.</p>
<p>lets keep this thread alive!!!
