sophmore in highschool, worried

hi there, sophomore in high school. i was just looking for some help trying to find some decent colleges, i know i still have a while to go but I’m kinda worried. i have a 3.1 weighted gpa, which sucks, but I’m going to really start to try hard. and i got a 1140 on my psat’s(the pre sat’s, don’t count and are graded out of 1520) any ideas for a college i could get into as of right now in the north east?

If you keep working hard in school, there will be many colleges/universities that will admit you. But where you can attend will depend a lot on what you can pay. Talk with your parents about how they plan for you to pay for your education. If they aren’t sure about things, ask them to help you run the Net Price Calculators at the websites of some of the public and private colleges and universities that are near where you live.

Here’s the thing: there are lots and lots and lots of schools that will accept you with a 3.1. That’s a little higher than my son’s GPA, and he’s holding 4 acceptances now, with 4 more schools waiting to come in. All are in the NY- PA- MA area. So take a deep breath; you’ll get into college.

Your focus now should be on your high school classwork. Let that “thy really hard” stuff start today. Make sure your homework is done thoroughly, and that it’s handed in on time. Learn to take good notes, above and beyond what’s written on the board. (Your notes should include small “notes” to yourself to explain what was said in class.) Read everything you can, from the daily newspaper to the novels you’re assigned in English class. All of those things, and more, will help you in a year and a half when you’re applying to college.

“Planning” to do better is easy; it’s the follow through that can be tricky.

That is great advice from @bjkmom . You can definitely get into college already, but if you work a little harder, you can improve your options.

@bjkmom - Nice feeling, isn’t it? I think students read threads on CC and panic, but the college “process” doesn’t need to be so stressful.

yeah dont worry about college admissions. Just do your best in highschool and when the time comes to apply then you apply. I only applied to one college about a month before admission deadlines and got in with a 3.6 GPA.

@digmedia , yeah, it’s wonderful. So many of the kids at school are still stressed, waiting to hear from a college-- any college.

There’s a lot to be said for doing your homework, finding the right schools, and getting those apps in early.
