Sophmore starting the research game

Hi!
Earliar this month I had my first talk with my guidence counslar and she said I should start doing some research of colleges.
I came up with a list(no Ivys for there is no chance in hell I would get in)
Carroll College
University of Chicago-a huge reach I am guessing already
Ursaline College
Oberlion College-reach
College of Lake County-community college-offers some bachelor programs that I am intrested in-might seem extreme to list this but it is actually a very good community college. i will be taking a class there over the summer.
Evergreen State College-reach
Marblo college-reach
New College of Florida-huge reach
And just for Kicks these two
Oxford University-huge reach-dream school
American University at Cairo-reach
i am just a regular student nothing special with not much money. Any suggestions on colleges I would appreciate and any info on the colleges that I have started to do research on
Thanks in advance.

Could you please supply your GPA and any standardized test scores (PSAT/SAT)? What are you looking for in a school anyway? (Demographics, major, location -urb,suburb,rural-, size...)

How did you come up with that list?

U Michigan, U Minnesota, U Wisconsin...whichever is your state

My advice is to visit a diverse range of colleges and see what you like and don't like about the schools. Then you can decide what kind of location, what student population, LAC or university, and stuff you like.

My PSAT is a 196
My PlAN composite score is 21
GPA is a 3.55 Unweighted (school does not give us weighted)
Go to a private school on scholarship-not a very perstigious school I doubt anyone has heard of it.

Freshman year
took one of the two honors courses offered at my school
Sophmore year
AP Modern European History

I cannot really say what i want in a college for if I had the smarts and the money I would go to a private small college to study archeology. However my dad just lost him job again-it took him two years to find a job last time, I fear it may take longer this time so I need to start putting food on the table-the quickest way to do that is after high school go to ClC or a local four year college and study bussiness and administration. Then become a secretary and just try to help my family out.
I already work 20 hours a week-waitress and babysit.
list is very random it is a mix of colleges that I dream and the kind that I realize I have to go to because of money.
As you see by my stats I am very average perhaps even below average
Any advice is appreciated

In at UChicago.

No offense, but this pretty much rules Oxford out. They offer very little financial aid to international students, and merit scholarships are almost impossible. If you apply to schools in the UK, be prepared to pay big $.

U Chicago is a slight reach for you.

For archaeology, a number of options are available. Penn State has quite a good progam and a dig in Egypt. The College of Wooster is another excellent option, as is Wesleyan (in CT). Hamilton has a fairly strong archaeology concentration in their anthropology department, and they offer a field school each summer. UT Austin and U Maryland are also worth consideration. Bowdoin has an excellent program, and they don't require test scores.

Even if you don't go into archaeology, these LACs will provide a great education that you can apply to any career field.

If money is a factor, I would advise applying to schools known for merit $. There's a long list on CC. George Washington or Boston University might be excellent schools for this (and they both have archaeology). The University of Arizona is another school I'd suggest (they also have a dig in Egypt) in this category.

The schools collegehelp mentioned all have excellent classics/archaeology programs, so they are definitely worth applying to. However, money could be a factor at these.

Thanks for the great advice.

Any more responses?

Misty, I think you should look at Beloit College. Archaeology is part of their Anthropology Department. A smallish liberal arts college with a wonderful faculty, it's in Wisconsin, just across the border from Rockford, Illinois. Your test scores put you in a match/slight reach position. Good luck!

Also, check into the summer archaeology programs for high schoolers at the University of Chicago; they do offer some scholarships.

Beloit-isn't that also a good college for languages? Next year i am taking up Madarin in school. If I like it I may want to continue it in college maybe even doing a double major with Archeology.
University of Chicago-I did'nt know they had summer programs! I am not going to do it this summer since I am taking a community college course-Introduction to Archeology and volunterring at a local animal shelter. Maybe I can do it the summer before my senior year and I will have more time to save up money.

Archaeology usually requires you to know German or French...something to keep in mind in college. To answer your question- yes, good ec's (and a great essay!) will offset average grades, especially at LACs and U Chicago, which look at the application as a whole more than many universities do.

My school only offers Spanish, French, and madarin. French-i screw up pronucation on simple French terms for history so I don't think I could do that. German has never been offered to me in school.

Sorry for double posting but are my Ec's any good? I try to stick to things I am really passionate about so it is not much but I think I showed through them that I am dedicated like Girl Scouts I have been doing it since I was five years old.

Your ECs are fine, but I wouldn't count on them overshadow GPA when applying to the more difficult colleges on your list. I'm confused as to why you don't include any of your state's public universities, especially if funding is such an issue to you.

Several questions: Are you a resident of Wisconsin or Illinois? Do you want to go into archeology or become a secretary (secretaries do not necessarily make more than CRM archeologists, and do not necessarily get by with less schooling)? You mentioned Egypt in particular. Are you interested in Egyptology in particular, or just archeology more generally?

I am a resident of IL-I personally don't like any of the public universities in my state and are too huge. I went to a huge middle school that I hated and then I went to my current school where there are only 48 kids in my grade. I like it alot so I would think a public university would be bad for me. Anyway most of the public universities are drinking party schools and I don't want that.
i actually like learning but I guess my GPA does not reflect that. I am actually very good at all my classes except for math-I got a C+ and it really hurt me. I gio in for help every day do well on quizs and do homework but i fail tests which make up 80% of grade. Spanish too I did not to well in but I should be doing better in it this year.
What I was trying to say earliar was that my dream profession would be to be an archeologist but I will probably end up going to CLC and work and McDonalds, then go for mangament jobs.
Based on a few things I figured out that with vast improvement I may get a 3.80 unweighted by end of senior year-would that help me?
Also, someone sid my Ec's are fiine but how could I make them really stand out in case my GPA cannot rise and my test scores stay the same or slightly decline?
Future thanks

If you lived in Wisconsin I could give better advice because I'm more familiar with the resources here.

When you say you want to be an archeologist, are you more interested in digging holes, processing artifacts, and writing site reports, -or- research and writing in an academic setting, including anthro theory? Kind of off-topic, but are you Native American at all (which would mean soooo many opportunities for archeology scholarships)?

If you like excavating, the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse would be ideal; it has a small feel, very close-knit archeology department, is almost certain to admit you, endless opportunities for hands-on field and lab training, and works to find jobs for its grads. Out-of-state tuition is high, though (but not necessarily higher than the private schools on your list).

It's hard to know what would improve your ECs. The best ECs are projects you design yourself out of fascination for the topic. If you do want to have some fun this summer, though, without going too far from home, visit the Center for American Archeology homepage (Kampsville, Illinois) at http://www.caa-archeology.org Click on the "opportunities" link on the left-hand side of the page, and then click on the "2006 Scholarship Opportunities for Women" link at the top of the page. Not many places offer full-tuition field schools for highschoolers, though I think you have to get to the Center on your own (and it's pretty isolated, beyond the reach of any public transportation).

It sounds like Beloit would be a good match for you. Anthropology, with a concentration on archeology, is probably the most popular major at Beloit. You would have lots of opportunities to do field work -- it seems like that there are at least a couple of sites going every summer. Given your gpa, I think that Beloit would be a match. They tend to be pretty good about financial aid as well.

I am a white female
I don't know if this helps me at all but I am from a some what intresting background-I am half irish and belorussian with myself and my mother practicing judaism and my Father practicing Catholicism.
My main intrest in archeology would be excuvating and finding artifacts-I been wanting to be an archeologist since I was four years old.
If I became an archeologist I think I would focus on Eastern European studies or Egyptology.
Additional note- I thought my EC's were good but people here seem to say that they are average-could someone explain why so I could improve upon them. Also, to keep in mind I am in the process of earning several major awards-the Gold Award is the highest award in Girl Scouts and very few girl scouts earn it. The award requires 65 hours of community service and 65 hours additionally for a project relating to the service. Thanks for all the advice-keep it coming!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
