Sophmore year

Hi, my son is in honors english in school. Unfortunately, it is a very tough course with a teacher who is very picky. So his grades are Cs . Would it be advisable to more to regular english to improve grades or do you think he should stick to honors to show honors on a college application. THe school counsellor told me that the honors classes are not weighted.

He is a B student overrall and likes to do math and engineering. english is not going to be his major.

Thanks

I’d move to regular English, not just because it will improve his grades, but because he’s clearly struggling and the regular English placement sounds like the correct one for him. There is nothing to be gained by sticking it out in a class for which he isn’t ready - not in high school and not in college. A year from now, he can discuss his 11th grade placement with his English teacher and decide if he’s ready to take an honors English class or if the fit in regular English makes more sense given his interests.
