Sophmore Year

How important is sophmore year considered in college admissions? I have a friend who skipped 10th grade and wants to know how it will affect his chances.

Skipping a year in high school can lead to less than stellar results when
applying to colleges. Single dimensional excellence is not the best criterion
for admittance to a top school. The breadth and depth in community and
EC activity involvement is the key focus of most top schools once basic
academic credentials are acceptable.

I have seen at least one case of someone getting burned due to skipping
grades in high school. Skipping ahead in a single course (typically Math)
on the other hand can be very helpful. Skipping English Wiriting and Social
Studies courses is generally a very bad idea. In that single case I alluded to
above the student was rejected at the top 5 schools and managed to finally
get into an alternative school after having stellar academics (including the skip).

Well his academics isn’t that amazing, I’d say top 5% and he has decent ECs and community service. Will having average academics harm him even more?

One less year = one less year to get awards, research, etc etc. Of course, he can also apply to some of the schools that have special programs for people who skip a year.
