I’m a sophomore in a Private Jesuit school and Brown isn’t really my first choice right now, but when the time for applying comes I’d like to see if I could get in.
PSAT - 185
Math - 68
CR/CW - 58/59 (hopefully I’ll be able to get them up and improve on this section of the test)

Are these good scores for a sophomore?

GPA: 4.16 — Cumulative: 4.06
My class rank isn’t available at my school anymore
Planned AP classes: World History(3)*, APUSH(3-4), English Language(4-5), Statistics(4-5), Government(3-4), Calculus BC(5), Physics(4-5), Chemistry(4-5), English Literature(4-5)
*=already taken
History is my worst subject and math seems to be my strongest.

ECs:
Model United Nations
Science Olympiad
Robotics
Christian Action Team* (community service basically)

I want to start volunteering in my city over the summer, too
*= plan on joining, haven’t joined yet

Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can improve before senior year comes? I’ll probably end up applying ED. I don’t really know how strong of an application this is, but if I apply ED in a few years will I have a shot at all?

If Brown isn’t your first choice when you apply, you shouldn’t be applying ED.

I don’t chance students, but I can point you to the fact that your predicted SAT scores are looking too low - you’ll need some serious studying to bring them up to Brown’s level (2100+).

Is it unrealistic for a sophomore to score a 185 on the PSAT then take the actual SAT and get 2100+? I feel like I could definitely do it. Weirder things have happened

It isn’t unrealistic, but it’s difficult. The PSAT is generally a decent predictor of SAT scores. You may want to take an SAT practice test and see what scores you’re looking at right now.

For heaven’s sake. You are a SOPHOMORE! Why on earth are you planning now, two years in advance, where you might apply early decision! Stop it!!!

Your SAT scores can go up significantly from your sophomore PSATs. Heck, many kids see a large increase just from junior spring to senior fall. Read lots of books. If you have an ereader, look up every single word you don’t know or aren’t 100% sure of. If you don’t have an ereader, make sure a dictionary is nearby. This summer, work on your math. Then, see what your junior year PSATs are, and go from there.

Next – stop predicting NOW what your AP scores will be. How can you predict your grade in a test for a class you haven’t even taken yet? And don’t “plan on” joining an activity. Either join, or don’t join.

Most of high school is ahead of you. Honestly, you have absolutely no idea what will happen to you in the next 18 months. Stop thinking about college. Do the best you can do in your classes. Make a contribution to your community through your extracurriculars. Don’t come back here for at least 12 months.

I’d like to say that my sister got a 185 sophomore year as well and right now as a junior, she has a 33 ACT and a 212 on the PSAT as a junior and is still hopefully going to improve. Don’t let people tell you it is not possible. If you study really hard, you can pretty much achieve your goal.

The ACT and SAT aren’t some tests that change drastically from test to test. If you study, I mean REALLY study, you can beat the test. I had a 174 sophomore year and have a 33 on the ACT as a senior. It’s honestly how much you plan on working for it…

I had no idea the reception of this thread would be both extremely positive and extremely negative haha
I probably worded this extremely poorly in the beginning. I’m thinking about college (obviously), but it definitely isn’t my top priority. My applying ED is only hypothetical. As of right now I have no first choice. My initial question was HYPOTHETICALLY if I were to apply to brown ED as a senior with improved test scores and more involvement would I have a chance?
I am definitely going to study and prepping for my 2nd go at the PSAT for next year. I feel sort of ignorant for posting this now actually haha

EDIT: Also, I put the “plan on joining” part of the extracurriculars because I have to be a junior to join them but I WILL join them
