So I recently found out that my brother got a 7k merit scholarship from the school I am currently attending. I am wondering if it is possible to apply or ask for these as a rising junior next year. The thing is, I am an all-around exceptional student, in respects to my GPA, involvement, and leadership.

I am wondering if it is known for anyone to just go and ask for the merit-based scholarship that a graduating high school students receives, and if so how do i go about doing that?

Start by looking at the terms of the scholarships that your school offers. It’s very likely that the type he received is restricted to incoming freshmen, but you won’t know until you look. There are often other named scholarships or department scholarships that are awarded to returning students. You can check with your advisor/department chair about those.

That’s not going to work. Those are offered to incoming frosh as an incentive to get them to come to the school. You’re already there, so the school doesn’t have to offer any incentives for you. Your bro’s merit was likely based on his ACT/SAT scores and GPA as an incoming frosh - which help the school’s ranking.

You need to look at your major dept to see if it offers any scholarships. however, it may be too late…many of those have fall deadlines. Depts often have some scholarships, but they’re usually smallish and only awarded to the tippy top students in the major.

I know it must be frustrating, but schools typically reserve their merit scholarships to get the best incoming frosh class…because it helps the schools’ ranking.
