Are sophomore grades counted in looking at an applicant's transcript? And if so, how much importance is valued to those grades?

I can’t think of a single college that does not count sophomore grades. There are a few (Stanford, Princeton, Carnegie Mellon, Johns Hopkins, and maybe a few others) that don’t consider freshman grades. Sophomore grades are universally counted as far as I know. They are slightly less important than junior grades but still very important.

Unfortunately I’ve had some family problems all through out high school and more so during junior year, but they did affect my grades. How much of a difference could that have when I mention it on my applications?

Depends on your highschool too; at mine your sophomore grades carry almost no weight on your transcript.

How is that possible?
