Hi, I am currently a first year student and I plan to live on campus for next semester. however, I am really confused about the housing placement process. It seems that sophomores are not able to choose their housing. But if we can only find out the housing placement during july, how can we cancel the housing without penalty (losing deposit and maybe paying partial rate for housing)? Or that's just not possible at all. I got a lottery number of 3844, which seems not that bad for a sophomore. The problem is that I really want to live in a economy single, but i don't know if it is popular or not. Does the apartments on Huntingtons and St. Stephan popular? I know they are really small, but size doesn't matter to at all, all i want is a private single room. what's my change of getting the economy single room? Does anyone has more experience with this and could offer my any suggestions? Any input is really helpful to me, and Thanks!

3844 is actually good for a first year student, as I recall. I think I was 3025 or something… Maybe…

Sorry, but you won’t get a single unless you are somehow heavenly blessed. Singles are gone before even second years get to pick, sometimes even before middlers.

Chances are, you won’t be able to cancel your housing without at the very least loosing your deposit, and possibly partial of your housing. You can always cancel, but its the cost of it that’s the problem. Also consider the fact that if you cancel in July, you need an apartment for September- the busiest time for apartments in Boston. Most people start looking for apartments in Febuary or March, so unless you get lucky, things you find close to September will be high priced for the desperate folks.

Thank you for all of the information. I think the best option for me now is to look for an off-campus apartment/room near school. As long as they are about 1000/per month, I am happy with it. Still don’t know if i can find one…
