Son got his assignment today. His lottery # was really bad >5000. His friend's lottery # was around 3800 or so, so they used the friend's lottery number. There were 3 in their group and they all got separated. They got their second choice of housing which is fine but very disappointed that they are all separated. All in the same dorm on different floors, though. I was just wondering how often that happened. Son called and they said nothing could be done except they could try to switch within themselves - which I can't imagine would be that easy. I would have thought they would have been together at least, maybe not in their first choice, but at least together. I know my son's lottery # (>5000) was bad, but I would have thought that the friends' lottery # they used was not that bad. Any input would be helpful. Thanks in advance.

I have no idea if this is common or not, but I would be really upset! (I also have a sophomore.)

I would think/hope that the roommate request would be the priority, over the residence request. Will your son let you intervene? If so, I’d call housing. We’ve had great luck with all aspects of NEU administration.

Good Luck!

The whole housing process for incoming sophomores sucks. IIRC, there’s a place on the housing application to rank your priorities (your requested roommates, requested dorm, etc.). But even if he ranked the roommates as his priority, housing is still overly complicated. Are any of them in singles or anything?

If you’re a rising soph. that has issues with your housing assignment reflecting your preference form, email w.pett@neu.edu. "

This was just recently tweeted. (This is why I love Twitter - instant information)

I recommend your son to email the above (and all of his friends too) to see if it can be resolved!

Hahaha I know that person (with that email). He’s in SGA. They are actually a pretty good group (very political but still manages to get things done). They probably got word of a bunch of bad housing and are going to present it to Northeastern to try and figure out what happened or force them to fix it.

At least your son got an assignment- I’ve had yet to hear anything and calling the Housing Office yields the standard response of “We’re trying to accommodate everyones preferences but we don’t expect to have many of the remaining applications processed and assigned until the middle of July.” And this is for someone who applied alone with a ~3700 number for a double.

Yeah… kinda frustrated here.

It does me no damn good for them to have extended the cancellation deadline to June 30th if I have to wait until mid-July to get an assignment…what the hell is taking so long?

Today’s the 30th, and still no updates. Awesome.

Don’t give up just yet everyone, I just got a 3 person apartment in dav a on Tuesday with everyone I requested. It may take a little longer but you could end up getting what you want so it’s worth it.

Yeah, but the thing is, after today, we’re stuck with whatever it is we get, because today’s the cancellation deadline. For those of us who haven’t even gotten an assignment yet, that’s a bit silly/unfair.

I don’t know how much of a role lottery number plays if you’re passed the point of getting to pick your own housing. I’m going to be a sophomore, and my lottery number was about ~4700 and I got my 2nd choice (West C) with the 2 people I requested.
On the other hand, I know three guys who all got split up. They spent a ton of time emailing housing and their roommates and managed to get themselves together, though, so not all hope is lost!
I am still waiting to find out who the 4th and final person in our apartment is, though, and based on what you are all experiencing, it might be awhile before we find out.
