My daughter is currently a freshman living in the dorms and is planning on living in the dorms again next year. I’ve heard
hear that housing can be difficult to find at Umich. What are her chances of getting into the dorms next year? Should she be looking for alternative housing?
She’s going to get a dorm. It just might not be her ideal choice (North campus, bursley, etc).
It depends on her priority code. She should have no problem in getting a dorm room, particularly single room. This year, my D was picking room the second or third day for sophomore year and it ran out of double room, at least in hill area, on the second day.
Thank you! It’s a relief to know that she will get in somewhere in the dorms. We are from out of state and so I wasn’t sure what to expect.
It’s absurd that one month in they are nailing down housing for next year. I wish the administration would do something about that.
^ For sophomore housing, the application is still months away. However, for apartment leasing around campus, my D has already signed the contract for next year last week. So it is not too early to think about it.
@brantly I don’t think administration can do anything about off campus housing though.
@YellowWolverine I bet they can. They have a relationship with the landlords. I read that the leases have to be approved by the university housing office (not one by one, but the general form has to be approved), which I think is a great thing so that students don’t get hosed. So there IS cooperation. I think that university housing officials and community landlords can come to an agreement. I can’t think of a downside for the landlords. There will still be the same number of students looking for next year’s housing, even if the process happens in February or March.
A side benefit of doing it second semester is that they can move sorority and fraternity rush to second semester.
@brantly I’d love it if umich set some requirements. I just haven’t heard of any requirements so far lol.
It’s a bit hard to look for housing, but not impossible. I suggest that she look for alternative housing since it is cheaper.
