hey, i'm a sophomore from a private school in LA county that's known as a good school
i usually receive good grades (A's-B's) and have an above 4.0 gpa
however, i am not very strong in extracurriculars, all i have is some volunteer hours at a local hospital
i am hoping to get a summer internship at City of Hope, but I am not sure if I will get that.
Does this lack of solid extracurriculars completely hinder my chances of getting into top schools (Ivy's, Cal, LA, Stanford, etc.)?

Your a sophmore, in the years to come your extra curriculars will come into fruition. You don’t need to have played an instrument for years, won national awards, etc to get into top schools.

Yes, you should definitely try to get more involved in some interest. For the UC’s, they have a comprehensive review, and that includes looking at your activities that show leadership, tenacity, look at this list from UCLA, see items 2, 3 and 6 and you will get the idea.
You are at the right place to begin to do more, and since you already have applied for a summer intership, that is something that shows initiative, even if you do not get in.
But don’t make the mistake of trying to do too much and riskiing your grades, one or tow things is plenty, stick with them.
