So I've just recently started thinking about IB as a sophomore. And I've also just realized that most folks interested in IB as undergrads do internships. If I can't do an internship this coming summer (after I'm done with my sophomore year), will I be completely screwed trying to get a IB job? What if I intern the summer after my junior year? I'm an Econ major with decent grades (over 3.5) at a large public university (not really a place where IB recruit.)

coming from a non-target it will be very hard getting an internship in IB either way after junior year. i would try to use your alumni database and look for small boutiques. if that doesnt work you should try to get something accounting/corporate finance related. like i said breaking into the industry from a non-target is very difficult, so definitely try to get an internship.

You should definitely have some kind of finance-related internship this summer if you want to do IB after you graduate

Argh… I think applications were due already for Goldman Sachs, plus I had other plans for this summer. I maybe I’ll still look at some other places.

So here’s how it works. Generally speaking, sophs are not targeted for BB SA internship opps - let alone sophs from non-target schools. SA internships are for juniors with the intention of earning a FT offer upon completion of the internship to begin the following June, upon graduation. There are instances where sophs will land those positions, but not without some serious networking/connections and a solid resume from, generally speaking, target schools.

That said, you should definitely look into possibly landing an IB internship with a small boutique - just to gain some marketable experience ahead of junior SA recruiting - as a non-target, it will definitely help to have some relevant experience since you will be competing with target students. If you can’t find a small boutique internship, not a big deal - look towards corp development, advisory, or even commercial finance positions - something relevant to banking that will call upon a similar skill set to showcase your capabilities, build your resume, and ideally, put you in a good position for SA recruiting and help to take some of the focus off of your non-target status.

Beyond that, I would begin looking to your alumni network for anyone in banking - even though it is a non-target, a large public univ should have some banking representation - just need to put the effort in.

Feel free to PM me if you have any other questions and good luck.

Thanks a lot for the info. I’ll definitely try to make contacts with the alumni network here.
