Sophomore on the right track?

No, it helps if you’re a citizen (no difference between citizen and permanent resident).

Keep with MedicalExpress. Try to see if you can use Pitt’s relation to hospitals, perhaps more formally.

Right now, you have your safeties and your reaches, you it may be useful to look for matches… but if you’re fine attending one of your safeties if you don’t get into your reaches, your college list is done.
(A bit short in my opinion - there are hundreds of colleges between OH, PA, and NYS, look into them. And of course you have the Mayo Scholars programs, you could look at the colleges that participate and add them to your list.)

@MYOS1634 Can you think of some matches for me?

Dickinson, Denison, Macalester, St Olaf, Syracuse, URochester, Fordham, URichmond, Lafayette, Union, Franlin&Marshall, Centre, Brandeis, Case Western Reserve…

The colleges that you mentioned above are LAC, I was more interested in Universities. Thanks for your opinion though

Correlate your Ec’s with your major, like joining HOSA if your school offers it! Your ACT score is fantastic, and also UPENN takes SAT scores into high consideration(Also family heritage, but if you’re first generation they might put that before students without heritage). So if you can get those EC’s together, and that GPA higher you will need less of a reach. Chance me back? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1620688-on-track-for-university-of-florida.html#latest

Definitely on the right track! Some reaches but nothing unrealistic :)

Syracuse, URochester, Fordham, URichmond, Brandeis, and CWR are universities.
Any specific reason you’re not interested in LACs?

Oh Okay, I am not into LAC because I feel that they are too small. Only somewhat bigger than a high school

Great extracurriculars and ACT, GPA is good too, just not as impressive as the ACT and EC’s. overall you’re a great candidate, you look to be on track, I don’t want to say you’re good because these are tough schools. Keep working hard, there are no guarantees at these schools but you look good so far.

Is Duke ED a 50-50 shot?

No, more like a 20-80 (rate is about 30%, but among those are recruited/hooked students so the real odds for a well-qualified student - which you are - are about 20%.)
I know you’re just a sophomore but some eyes must have bulged seeing your estimation of 50-50, as it is either very foolish or very arrogant. Don’t worry though, it’s a mistake many highly qualified applicants make.

You are on the right track! I’d say, work hard in your AP classes so you keep a good GPA and do well on the AP tests. You have many ECs, but now would be a good time to start flowing them all towards a certain “theme”, so it will display enthusiasm and passion towards what you want to be. Other than that, do well on standardized tests, and write stellar essays! Good luck and thank you for chancing me!

I definitely think you have a chance! You have really good test scores but your GPA and ECs might be slightly lacking. I’d say your biggest reach is UPenn but you have a shot at the rest.

If you access to university professors they you should be trying for research positions for the summer. Then you can submit to Siemens and/or Intel Competition. It’s a lot of work but it helps you get noticed. Then if you have a good relationship with a research professor you can ask them for a recommendation letter - another plus!

@KathleenA Unfortunately my dad does not have much access to the professors because he works in the computer technology section

I still would recommend contacting professors. Put together a resume and start emailing them, it’s worth a try. UPitt is very supportive of the Siemens competitions. Some of their professors were judges for the regional finials held at Carnegie Mellon the past few years.

@KathleenA OK thanks for that idea

Hi, Thanks for chancing me!

Duke (ED)- low reach (RD would be reach)
Penn- low reach/reach
Johns Hopkins- high match/low reach (BME would be low reach)
Northwestern- low reach (however, I’ve noticed in the most recent year’s results thread that a high number of kids with 33’s were accepted)

Good luck! Hope this helps

Make sure you continue your extracurriculars all through high school, focusing on diverse ones that also interest you. Not sure all of your awards will count for as much (NSHSS in particular). I believe that Duke, UPenn, Hopkins, and Northwestern will be low reaches if you can keep your grades up in classes. Remember that it is better to take fewer AP classes and get higher grades and make sure you have time for the EC’s. Also, demonstrate interest in all schools by going to regional info sessions, requesting information, or touring the school.

@musicandtennis
I have attended a 1 hour lecture on Penn and Duke (separately) over this past fall. The people in charge of Admissions had come and talked about the college. I was in love with Duke since 3rd grade. I went there to visit my cousin. ( I have had around 2-3 close cousins that have graduated from Duke) I also fell in love with UPenn after the lecture. I am going to tour Penn next week with my parents.
